Not that I expect the NHL to get-it, they have been so obtuse throughout this whole thing, but Scott clearly brought a level of emotion to the game which is rarely there (both for the fans and the players).
It would be smart for the NHL to incorporate something like this into the event every year. 4 teams, each gets an unsung hero:
- The previous year's Masterton Trophy winner is automatically in the game
- The previous year's King Clancy Trophy winner is automatically in the game
- The previous year's MVP of the NWHL/CWHL hockey league is automatically in the game
- A fan vote for an unsung hero of the game (could be AHL or NHL or even a recent retiree)

I know, tall order.

Nope. This is a discussion site.
We will discuss things.

Yes... this.
It was lightning in a bottle. Any repeat will just be contrived. I think people are forgetting this is an Allstar game. "Allstar".
If is not exclusive to Allstars only moving forward. Then just abolish it and rename it the open invitational warm story game.
I mean some people are losing their minds on being rational. I saw post by a fan on Yahoo sports that the All Star game should permanantly rename the MVP trophy to the John Scott Award.
You know the funny thing about John Scott as a goon. He was one the most hated SOB's amongst fans for years. One of the few goons that tried to thump non fighters. Took runs at non fighters. Funny how people forget about that. But hey it was funny and nice to see the other side of the guy being jovial and being loved by the players.
It was hillarious to see him snipe the twine on the breakaway.
That extra 100k will help his family so thats cool.

It is no more disparaging a response than that from people who seek to shame those of us who did not want Scott participating in the ASG into conceding that it was a great idea. I disagree. It turned out well, but it doesn't change the fact that I would have preferred if Scott had not been there.

The game was different, but I am not at all convinced that it was any more entertaining than it would have been had Scott not been there. I think it very likely could have been more competitive.

But I was told the Pacific team would be uncompetitive because of Scott? You're kind of crafting a no-win scenario there, Textcritic.

I get the desire to see this sort of thing implemented, but you can't just simply manufacture the level of emotion that was borne from the John Scott ASG story. I would imagine that the "unsung hero" novelty would wear thin before to long.
I also should point out that without changes, and in the wake of fans' zeal to replicate what happened this year, the League then runs the risk of having a starting lineup littered with NHL journeymen and AHL players. This is not a good idea.

I was wrong about that. But I don't think it is because Scott made that team so much better. It's because everyone was just so happy for him, which is fine. It doesn't change my thoughts, though, that it would have been a more competitive game with an actual star player in his place in the Pac. Div. lineup.

John Scott named 1st star of the week! LOL Jiri's infant analogy is looking kind of apt.

Put me in Jiri's camp, as notwithstanding the result, he didn't deserve to be there any more than the hundreds of other good guys in the NHL that will never have a sniff at the ASG.
Not saying he isn't a capable AHL/NHL player, which is a million times better than I ever was, but it still seems to be some revisionist history on what his vote was really about. I mean, him getting voted in, was a joke, right? No one thinks he is one of the top 30 or so players, based on this weekend, right? The vote was to show the NHL something, but what is that something?

Best line out there...and Gaudreau hit what 2 or 3 crossbars. 3 points was nice but it could have been 5 or 6 easily
And Scott player of the week, NHL is kinda miking it at this point

How awesome would have it been if he has some random qualifier in his contract that paid him a sweet bonus if named a NHL star of the week.

Maybe.
Then again many fans seem to like voting for some bottom-tier player(s). This wasn't the first time. Taking the option away completely seems a bit unnecessary. I think if they put some thought into it, the NHL could turn it into a tradition that some fans would enjoy, but would be more palatable to the types of fans that hated having John Scott at the ASG.
Relabeling it into "unsung hero" or something I think could work. It would also help contain it, so that type of voting doesn't mess up the regular voting for the actual stars of the game.
Obviously it wouldn't be as big of a deal as this John Scott thing, but it doesn't really have to be. Just another bit of fan service, which is what the ASG is all about anyway.
The idea of bringing in some career AHL guy seems fun to me. There's some pretty decent players there.

There should be one NHL plugger voted into the ASG every year by the players. That would be awesome.

Yeah thats kind of how I see it. Trust me, I have nothing against talent-less engineers making it to the NHL and all-star game! And I actually kind of enjoyed those brawls like Detriot-Colorado in the late 90's, and I "get" the role of Godard when he was here to fend off Boogard and the Oilers schmuck (forget his name)... but I guess John Scott, the players and many fans love the romantic story of it. I also think its kind of patronizing, mockery and kind of pitiful but if Scott/players/fans eat it up, thats great. I don't want to stomp on anyone's fun if they enjoy it.
