I think some of those articles came out before Maloney commented.
I admit I had not read the Bergevin comments and they are strange.
Anywas I realize I'm in the minority on this. I'm glad it worked out but I personally didn't enjoy his participation. I don't enjoy seeing players let up. For me sports is about playing the game the right way.Scott was given treatment not disimilar to letting a toddler score a goal against his dad. Even in an ASG I thought that was silly.
But I know I'm in the minority on this one. So I'll move on and just hope this is the last of it. I'm happy people enjoyed his participation because that's what sports is about - having a fun. I didn't like it - but I know when I'm fighting a losing battle.
For the first point I bolded, you should know that All-Star games aren't played at full speed and intensity anyway. As it is, this All-Star game was much more intense and competitive than I've seen perhaps ever by a long ways. What in blazes did you expect??
And you saying that 'Scott was given treatment not disimilar to letting a toddler score a goal against his dad' is quite the hyperbole too.

Yea you're right, I got the wrong breakaway. It was the one after he hit Kane that the backchecker was floating. Probably too busy laughing at the hit.
I watched it again. Josi was at the opposite end of Scott and Scott had a clear lead to the goalie when starting his break away. Nobody is that fast to cut across the whole rink like that, as well as catch up. Not from the red line anyways. Not Josi either.
Yeah, saying they were babying him is a little silly and suggests that you guys were maybe looking too hard for it because you wanted to see it? If you watch any goal in that game there's an element of letting up on defense.
First all star game (3 games I guess haha) I have ever watched all the way through. 3 on 3 with the best talent in the NHL resulted in end to end hockey that made you never want to take your eyes off the screen. John Scott adding an underdog story that made you want to cheer for him all the way to the end.
Couldn't have asked for a more perfect night.
Can the NHL keep this kind of momentum going for future NHL All Star games? The prize money is obviously the key to getting the players to play some actual decent hockey in the past two decades, but the 3 on 3 with four divisional teams made it awesome to watch.

They need to give away incentives for the skills comp. I think its entertaining to see Subban dress up like Jagr, but its not a skill. When I think back to the Vince Carter dunks at the NBA all star games, I want to see NHLers put on the best tricks in the world.
If this stuff bothers you, I genuinely feel bad for you. For such a minuscule event in the grand scheme of all things that is life to have such an effect on you is truly pathetic. I don't mean that insultingly.
So basically: "No offence, but I feel bad for you and you're pathetic."
I don't know, maybe Jiri isn't the one letting this whole John Scott thing affect him too much.

I haven't enjoyed an all star game this much since.... well probably ever!! He had a pretty darn hard slap shot from what I remember too. Can't remember the exact number he hit on radar, but I know it was in the 90s!

Think his first attempt was 92 or 93 mph and his second attempt was 95.
Besides, isn't one of the primary tenets of any team game only wanting people who want to be there? Scott wasn't looking for excuses to get out of it like some players do.
He wanted to be there, doesn't that inherently make it more entertaining? He may not be the most talented guy but he sure as hell wasn't half-assing it like some stars do.
Some didn't want to be there, he did. I doubt they're lamenting their loss of $90k and a car to a guy making a tiny fraction of their salaries.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

Yes. Exactly that. And because this was easily, and far and away the most competitive ASG that anyone can remember Duchene's play on Scott's "breakaway" stuck out like a sore thumb. I certainly wasn't rolling my eyes at any other point in the tournament.
In the end, good for Scott. I'm happy for him, but am also hopeful that this is the end of any future ballot-stuffing debacles. This is a great product for the League to market, and it would be even better without another charity case. The NHL did a very good thing to embrace this as a one-off and make it work, but next year, the best thing to do for all parties concerned is to fix the fan vote system, or eliminate it altogether.

I didn't think he should be there at first but I'm eating some crow now. I really enjoyed this allstar game it was probably one of the best I've seen and it was just a fun time all around for everyone. I didn't mind that he was there at all it was a feel good story.

This whole Scott thing gave us something that most fans can appreciate - emotion.
Seriously, when was the last time there was any emotion at an all-star game? They are usually dull because players aren't playing hard (3 on 3 helped to correct this somewhat - there was a lot more effort out there), and Scott scoring, and then scoring again, knocking Kane down, then having a fight with Kane, and then being named the MVP and having players carry him on their shoulders? That was fantastic emotions that solicited some laughter, big smiles, warm hearts and perhaps some watery eyes as well.
I just feel sorry for the people who just disagreed so much with Scott ever being allowed to play, and watched the game hating when he was ever on the ice or being talked about. Emotion is something that you just don't often see in an all star game. This was great. Can't be replicated in my opinion.

Up until this weekend I did what I always do when there's a big story about something that has everyone all riled up and that was largely ignored it.
If anything, I went into the weekend slightly irritated that he'd be taking up a spot on the Pacific team somewhat holding them back... but I actually didn't think he looked terribly out of place. I know everyone was trying to set him up, but his two goals were actually decent. I know the first one was a tap in but he did go to the net with his stick on the ice. Also, the second one on the breakaway was actually a pretty nice goal.
When you consider that he actually didn't stink the place out and contributed to his team winning the tournament, it validates the feel-good story that it ended up becoming.
If he was just there and was a hinderance, I can see some of the bitterness being warranted, but at the end of the day his actually contributing to the Pacific winning made it a great human interest piece.
Seeing his pregnant wife and kids (even though they panned to them a few too many times) really made it nice to see him end up with 100K and the car for being MVP. In any other year, the recipient(s) of those things wouldn't mean anything, but this all ended up working well on all angles. Was nice to see.
I hope the positive of this story is that the NHL can't overstep it's reach when it comes to players. That all players in this sport deserve respect for what they do to compete and entertain us, no matter their role in the leagues.
There was just a lot of harsh judgemental commentary that wasn't needed. It takes away from the enjoyment of the sport.
