You're wrong. No it doesn't. It doesn't show that at all.

You'd think with the amount of buzz this has generated that someone went out and shot a cop... no nevermind that, even cops getting shot doesn't generate this much buzz. It's over hype.

Well said sir. Well said indeed.

You sure could have fooled me, with all your incredulity and ire directed to those who have been open to the idea that Wideman is acting with intent here.
Quote:
However, Wideman is a veteran, never has had anger issues, has been hit plenty and not reacted, is one of the guys the Flames pick to speak with officials, had no indication of anger after being hit (before or after he ran into Henderson). As suspensions are based on a balance of probabilities, not maybes, and the onus of proof would be on the league to establish intent, I don't think the case is made out.
|
I am much more confident in what I can see than in what I imagine to be occurring in the minds of others. To that end, I think that any argument that this is nothing more than a simple collision between a player and an official is not borne out by the video. Moreover, I'm not entirely convinced that "intent" is the only measure by which this case will be decided. Culpability is often extended beyond one's motivations. In their efforts to protect officials, I would have to think that Wideman's responsibility for his own actions—or reactions—would weigh heavily in any decision made about how long to suspend Wideman. As they should.

The rule requires the action to be deliberate, so intent is pretty much the only issue for culpability.
I see the video completely differently than you. I am also not directing any ire at you, who I respect as a poster, (or anyone with a contrary view except perhaps those who insist they must be right or are trashing the player needlessly).

You are correct, you're nearing 40 posts...
And yeah, I have a lot, but they're mostly replies! And this thread isn't about me - I'm just trying to discuss Wideman. What's wrong with talking a lot?

I sort of disagree. If the league determines the hit was unintentional, there is still a decent chance Weidman receives supplemental discipline. Wideman is ultimately responsible for being in control of his own body and officials have to be protected.

The "abuse of official" rule requires a deliberate act, so unless there's another rule to punish him under, I don't think that's right.
