If the Flames take on Bernier than I think Wideman has to be part of the deal.
Wideman and Hiller for Bernier and Polak. Flames then save a little over a million in cap space and get a rental player in Polak they could maybe get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for at the deadline this year.

Leafs wouldn't want wideman at all. I could see Bernier for Hiller with both sides adding either a bad or an expiring contract. I could see them having interest in Smid or England over wideman though.

You don't think he would want to play for his hometown team? Doesn't he live there in the summer?

The salary cap is staying relatively flat next season. Last off-season we saw teams being very careful when handing out contracts and I don't see that changing this upcoming off-season. These middling potential UFAs like Russell or Hudler are unlikely to receive good long term deals and run a risk at being really in trouble if they're not signed early on and teams are running out of cap space. I don't see any team offering Russell $4 million unless maybe if it's a 1 or 2 year deal.

Doesn't mean he wants to play there. I think when he first signed here, it was cause he thought we were a playoff team that thought we had a chance at winning the cup (or best chance out of all teams willing to give him $5M over 5 years)... with his NMC it could be very hard to trade him.

I just went through your post history. You consistently misspell Gaudreau, Monahan, and Bennett. In fact a few of he names you did spell right are McDavid and Chiarelli... and that was in a post hoping for the Oilers to go on a run. I have a feeling someone is a Coilers fan.

ooh interesting quirk on Cowen's contract may lead to a cap team trading for him and then buying him out to gain cap space
http://www.tsn.ca/mondaymustread-rar...value-1.428314
Quote:
That’s because Cowen’s contract will be a particularly valuable asset for a specific set of teams this offseason.
If Cowen is bought out of the final year of his deal in June, the net result will be a rare $650,000 salary-cap credit for next season, which could help a team cover potential overage penalties paid out from this season.
An overage penalty is applied to next season’s salary cap when a team paid performance bonuses in contracts but did not have room under this season’s cap.
Nine teams carried an overage into this season, ranging from $90,000 to $969,000. It means that a team like Chicago, for instance, started this year $750,000 in the hole on the $71.4 million cap because of an overage penalty.
According to GeneralFanager.com, there are 10 teams this season that are on track to start next year with an overage, and that’s if only 50 per cent of their performances bonuses are realized.
To use the Blackhawks as an example, rookie Artemi Panarin could well hit all of his $2.6 million performance bonuses, leaving the cap-strapped Blackhawks with a hefty carryover for next year. Teuvo Teravainen could also hit for $850,000.
Detroit, Pittsburgh, Washington, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Florida, Tampa Bay and the New York Rangers are teams with similar potential issues.
For those teams, acquiring Cowen and then buying him out would get them closer to starting next season on level ground. The difference would mean a roster spot on most clubs.
Cowen is the only player on the market who would serve a dual purpose for a firm playoff team. He could serve as an important insurance policy on the blueline for a postseason run.

I appologize for my spelling as english isnt my first language and in regards to the "oilers on a run post" u might wanna read what i meant in it instead of taking it out of context before u accuse me of being an oilers troll.

Haha you're such a homer.
Toronto is embarking on a 3 - 5 year rebuild. By the time they're good (if they're good and that's a BIG if), Wideman will be 35+ and either retired or on his last season or two. He likely wants to win, so very unlikely he would waive. He'd either go to a contender or stay in Calgary IMO.

I'm not saying he's one but some players prefer not to play for their hometown team. I remember someone saying on here last season that Mike Green has zero interest in playing in Calgary.

Hometown team is so overrated as a factor in waiving. Chances of re-signing at a good salary and cup potential, etc. are far more important.
Would Iginla have waived to go to Edmonton two years ago? Not a chance.

Gemel Smith is a decent depth C/RW as well.
The strength of the Stars farm system is their defense though.
Between Honka, Nemeth, Backman, Lindell, Johns, Hansson, and Bystrom, the Stars have a bunch of guys that are close to being NHL ready. If the Flames were to deal off a player or two to Dallas, I would not be surprised if defense prospects were the target. Backman and Lindell would both look good in a Flames jersey and would be more likely to be made available than a guy like Honka.

I would be very interested in Johns. He looked like an NHLer to Chicago fans IIRC.
