Makes it all that more unlikely that we'll be seeing the playoffs. Pretty much need to win 13 out of the 16 before the deadline to claw back into it. Only 2 of the 16 are against bottom teams. The rest are split between playoff teams and those that are just out of a spot.

Fun times.

That's a bit extreme. Ten games over 0.500 by the deadline on order to make it in?

You have to figure that the other teams are likely going to win 9 or 10 out of their next 16 (that's about the pace they have been on since Dec 1st). In order for the Flames to make up the 6 points they trail Vancouver, they have to be better. That means going on a ridiculous run if they want to eliminate it before the deadline.

If you're expecting that to continue, you're forecasting a 98ish points to get in. I really don't think that'll be it

I am expecting at least two of those teams to continue to play well and be near that pace the rest of the way. They might cool off a bit, but I could easily see 95-96 being the target. Calgary would need 50 points in their last 37 games or a 25-12 record. If they were to win 13/16 between now and the deadline, that would still mean they would have to go 12-9 the rest of the way after that, which would still be above the pace they have gone to this point.

Overall, it's not likely unfortunately.

So the Oil figured out how to pull the goalie down by two. Guess it was because nobody was going for a hattrick

Late, but I laughed at Jeremy Tagger of OLP on Twitter comparing Habs/Leafs to an episode of Bum Wars.

Almost a worst case scoreboard for the Flames playoff chances as Vancouver losing was the only positive while ARI, COL, SJ, ANA all won.

Too many teams in the pacific in it for us to be able to pass several of them.
The Minnesota Wild lost too.

Flames have played FOUR less games than Vancouver...don't think you have factored that in at all

Yes, but they're not in the playoffs either. The yotes passed them due to GP.

Last year at this point the Flames were only 2 points out of a spot and barely made it and that was due to the Sharks imploding at the the end of the year. It is insanely difficult to make up ground over a long period of time. Things tend to even out over the long term. Just like how the Flames won 7 in a row and then promptly lost a bunch of games.

For Calgary to make it, three of the four teams will have to self destruct. I could see both Arizona and Vancouver possibly falling apart, but I don't see the Sharks falling off the face of the earth and Anaheim is starting to really come around. Anything can happen, but it is going to be insanely difficult for it to happen.

For each team to hit 95 points

SJ - 21-15 (96 pt pace)
ARI - 22-13 (103 pt pace)
VAN - 22-11 (109 pt pace, not going to happen)
ANA - 23-13 (105 pt pace)
CGY - 25-12 (111 pt pace)

Anaheim has played at a 103 point pace since their disaster of October ended (1-7-2) and are starting to play even better recently. For comparison, since October Calgary has only played at a 92 point pace.

Vancouver was your example I was responding to...not saying its gonna be easy for the Flames to make the playoffs but they certainly don't need to be 10 games over .500 by the TD. 95 is high...sportsclubstats gives you a better than 50% chance at 90 points
