This needs to be done now, retirement age should be pushed back to 67, possible higher. When thee pensions, CPP etc. were first set up you could count on people really only living a few years after retirement, now it's more like 20 and these funds just cannot sustain that financially. Harper did move the retirement age to 67 but Trudeau has (or is going to) make it 65 again.

On the topic on unions, you can see they are setting up for a fight they know is coming when it comes time to renegotiate contracts. When the Notley government announced the wage freeze for non union employees a week to two back the unions almost immediately publicly condemned it even though it doesn't effect them directly. They know what's coming next and are angling to gt public opinion on side with them before hand.

I wish you were correct. NDP will ruin this province. Chances are, however, that you are wrong. I am 99% sure Alberta NDP will be re-elected at least for one more term. For as long as the right wing remains disjointed and uncoordinated, there is no chance for either PC or WRP getting enough votes for a majority. But the feelings are too bitter now for both, they are still sulking and being mad at each other. They need to swallow their collective idiotic pride, form the new party now with a different name and different leader and prepare for the next election with a solid business program.

Tell me again who won the 2012 election despite the right being "disjointed and uncoordinated"? Who finished second? Notley's actions thus far have done more to lose her votes than gain them. If she keeps that up, you could split the right into three parties and one them would still win.

In 2012, you've had a reputable party that just steered the province out of the worst economic crisis since, let's say, 1982. WRP was a brink right–wing party with no reputation at all; just a bunch of outcasts, really, disagreeing with the party drifting towards the centre. Don't kid yourself, Redford did not lose because of the airplane fiasco or the McDougall penthouse scandal. It was clearly because of her centrist tendencies. Alberta's right can't stand it for some silly reason. That's why Liberals have no chance here. You've got to be clearly left or right to be "liked" politically. Just blows my mind.

the NDP is still polling at about 30% and trailing what I assume is Wildrose by a slight bit. From reading this thread you'd think they'd be at 5%.

I think they're down about 11 or 12% since the election, that's a pretty significant drop. Ther Wildrose looks like its up about 8%, so it looks like the NDP are bleeding popularity to the Rightest of the Right wing party, which means they're facing a revolution of their protest win.

The Liberals look like they scraped up 4 to 5%, which is a shift in the Left.

30% is not good for a government that was over 40%, with less then a year in power. Where the big shift could come is with the budget which is dropping fairly soon, and the Royalty review which is dropping soon.

If those are both pieces of bad news, the NDP could shift another 10% off, which would then class their fall as a free fall.

On another note, I am pissed off that this province has basically been blockaded by the rest of this country.

I would hope that our Prime Minister would step up with a statement, but he was too busy killing pipeline projects of his own with the policy letter concerning tanker traffic on the West Coast.

Seriously I think everyone should boycott products coming from BC and Quebec. I think that Alberta firms should cancel contracts with businesses in those provinces as well.

Set up "checkstops" at the BC border and the Sask border. Delay everything that comes from BC or Quebec that isn't intended for Alberta.

Impractical? Of course.

That was an impressive job of dodging the question. The answer, of course, is that the PCs won that election despite a significant split on the right.

The NDP provincially are in the same position the PCs were federally: They have no room to grow without moving to the centre. The longer Notley stays in the looney left, the lower her chances of being re-elected are. Because the only place she can go is down. And each successive mistake is only going to create more of that downward pressure. And the NDP are already only about 4 points up on the virtually leaderless PCs for third place, as of the December polls.
