This article explains it. But, in a nutshell... it a difference in seams.

Quote:
Comparison between selvedge and non-selvedge jeans. Notice on the non-selvedge jeans that there isn’t a clean edge on the fabric near the seam.
I think it's the white line seam vs the "V" sewing seam. To be honest, I have no idea what benefits Selvedge would offer. (Hopefully I'm not mistaking which seam to look at)

Quote:
Shuttle looms produce tightly woven strips (typically one yard wide) of heavy fabric. The edges on these strips of fabric come finished with tightly woven bands running down each side that prevent fraying, raveling, or curling. Because the edges come out of the loom finished, denim produced on shuttle looms are referred to as having a “self-edge,” hence the name “selvedge” denim.

Do they actually carry the shrink-to-fit there?!

I was under the impression they were damn near impossible to get in Canada. I got my last pair in Washington.

Yes, I am fairly certain that they carry them.

Winners. Preferably Buffalo since they seem to always have cuts that fit me well. As with anything at Winners selection can be hit or miss but I usually find something I like.

I get comfort learning that there are more than just me who blew out the crotch on my jeans.

I always thought that I am the only one who is too fat and thus my thighs rub against each other...

After spending $$$ money on designer jeans that wear out in a year or two I'm back to 501's. They look good and they last.

They were black Levi's (can't recall the number). They were so damn comfortable. I would wear them to work (warehouse job & construction) then out to the bar.

Damn I miss those jeans.

It's a number of factors. If you buy fits that are quite slim, cycle in them often, or don't wash them, you are going to blow the crotch out regardless of your size.

I do 511s and 505s. Anyone got any pro tips to avoid crotch wear? I'm not overweight or anyhthing so I don't think my thighs rub togethrr more than a regular guy.

That is good information to have, I'll have to pop in there next time. I've had a heck of a time sourcing them around these parts, or even online that would ship to Canada without paying through the nose.

So as much as I originally chuckled at this thread when it came up, I realized my jeans are all pretty much toast.

So off I went to Crossiron. Picked up a pair of 501 and 505's for less than I pay of a single pair of anything else in my closet. First time I've worn a pair since, oh probably high school.

It was like seeing an old friend you haven't seen in years, yet once you start talking it's like you saw each other yesterday.

Button flys still suck though.

Haha I might have also been wearing my Raybans today with my new 501s.

Bumping this thread because crotch blowouts on 2 pairs of jeans at the same time.

I used to go to Heroes in Chinook for raw denim, but they closed down. I've been getting N&F for 3 years. What other retailers in the city? Seeing some name brands here, not sure where to go to find them.

Kixs sells N&F as well as Nudies and Neuw. They are in Southcentre and Cross Iron I think

Although it has been mentioned before, Brooklyn in Kensignton has great jeans and typically has very good sales on their expensive jeans which can make them way more affordable. I've bought my last few pairs there, including nudies and although they can be prone to crotch holes if you take it back to the store they will send it to their tailor who fixes them for about 10$

I've had them for 1.5-2 years and wore them probably 4-5 times/week for a lot of that. Hand-washed maybe 2-3 times. I'll patch the holes and keep wearing them. It's fun to see the evolution over time. It's nice to know they are totally unique.

APC has a "butler program" and will buy back your worn-out APCs and sell them for a premium.
When you say washed 2-3 times do you mean a week or in 2 years?

If I understand this right in order to be "hip" (is that still a word?) one should start with unwashed jeans, preferably over $200 and wear the same pair every day for 2 years and not wash them? In the end the result is something that is more desireable and looks better than a $60 pair of jeans that someone washes after every 1 or 2 wears? Is this correct? The man who wears clean clothes is now lower on the societal chain?

Further more you can then sell these 2 year old un-washed jeans and someone else will pay extra to wear your dirty clothes?

Have I been left behind?

WTF are you doing in your jeans that requires them to be washed every 1 or 2 times you wear them?
