Oh for Christs sake.
"I slid down an icy hill on a sheet of cheap plastic and hurt myself, who can I sue?!"
Are these people serious? And they won!? How are people like this not laughed out of court?

+1 one for the Maple Ridge golf course. You could get a lot of speed going down that hill on a GT racer and in hindsight we were very lucky to never suffer an injury.
The best place ever though is at the end of Kootenay Road in Fruitvale BC. We would pull our GTs as far up the old logging road as possible then enjoy an epic 10 minute ride down.
I miss tobogganing

Bylaws like this are necessary to prevent the whack of lawsuits that would surely happen otherwise. It's called risk management. I don't want my taxes to pay for the mistakes of others if it can be avoided, and it can. Pretty much every city of any size has similar bylaws.

We should ban cars because people die and get hurt driving them every single day.

I strained my wrist pushing a cart at Canadian Tire that had a bunk wheel. Should I sue?

I always liked sledding in Canmore. Right next to the cemetery, so you always had the images of tombstones rushing by as you hauled butt towards the power poles.

The big hill by Hawkwood Elementary school was my jam growing up. Always got compressed down from all the kids walking home (including myself) so you would really get moving.

I know you were somewhat joking, but with cars we have mandatory insurance.

The crowdfunding rubbed me the wrong way when I saw this on the news; I wonder if I'm jaded due to recent events on CP. But what got to me was in the news story they said the parents had come forward with their personal tragedy as to inform others of the potential risk. (Sounded fair.) Then they added the link to their go fund me; which seemed a more likely reason to want news coverage.

My buddy lost a couple teeth when we were kids at the lake sundance hill. It was pretty nasty. One of the best super steep hills is in glenmore park at the end of 90th that parallels the indian reserve. Its steep, a little rocky and its lined with trees on either side. But with the right amount of snow it made for one heck of a ride.

Here is the Canmore one:

The slope leads directly to the big power poles. Nice slope though, you could really move. 5 man tube runs were a blast.

Then the problem is the lawsuits. Why are judges ruling the city liable for these sorts of accidents?

Blame the legal system. If people didn't sue for every little perceived injustice in life, even if it was a result of their own stupidity, we wouldn't need these stupid by-laws.
Also I blame bubble wrap parents.

Didn't read the thread but is Turtle Hill still a thing? In S.W. near Westgate?

I'm wondering what type of settlement I could get by tripping on a crack in the pavement while jogging and breaking something.
I'll deal with a broken knee cap for a couple hundred grand.

Was the break caused by any specific impact? Or actually just from your but bouncing so hard on the packed snow and ice? If so that is even more terrifying, as I always assumed no trees/fences/poles and you were good to go.

Really ####ty that this kid is now paralyzed. Every facet of his life is going to be different going forward, and obviously not for the better. It doesn't bother me in the least that a Go Fund Me page was set up: he ought to take every advantage he can get.

It was one big bump that broke it near the bottom of the hill. The best I can describe it, the hill didn't taper off smoothly. Imagine the shape of the slope more like a checkmark instead of a 'J,' and my ass slammed hard on the ground when the angle abruptly changed.

Obviously I'm kidding, but how is it any different from the Hamilton laywer getting $900K for hurting himself sledding on an illegal hill, or the Edmonton lady that crashed into a ski jump?
In fact, it's the city's responsibility to properly maintain side walks, I'd say I'd have a better case than those two.
