That doesn't mean it was a good hockey trade because it wasn't. He gifted Sharp to one of their rivals.

Patrick Sharp is a 34 year old winger who had all of 16 goals last year with a few games missed due to injury. He's making 5.9 million. It's not like you're going to get a lot in return for someone with that kind of situation to consider. The fact that he's scored 16 goals this year is good for Dallas, but if I were them I wouldn't expect anything more than 20 goals from Sharp. He's declining and paid a lot. He's no longer a 30 goal scorer, and the Stars are struggling again despite his presence. Chicago is ahead despite not having Sharp and getting little in return.
Basically, your reasoning is ignoring all the data. It's not really that bad for Chicago if they end up with Sekac longer term instead of Sharp short term.

Exactly. If he was just going to give him away, you'd think there would've been a team in the eastern conference that would've been interested.

It might not have hurt them, but there was always potential he could bounce back and help his new team, in this case a division rival. You can't tell me there was zero interest from a team in the east, in fact I remember all the rumors were about Washington until they made the Oshie trade and signed Williams. I won't hold it against Bowman though. Everybody misses once in a while, and he wins more often than he loses, by a fair margin.

Sekac lines up with Toews and Hossa, scores at a PPG for the rest of the season, Chicago wins Cup. I think I know how this ends.

No, I literally can't tell you if there was interest from teams in the East because I wasn't taking calls on Sharp. In fact, none of us were, so anything we say is speculation at best. Your scenario might be correct. It might just be that Bowman only got an offer from Dallas. It might be that it's somewhere in the middle and he made the call based on what Dallas was offering being better than what anyone else was offering. We don't know, so we can only evaluate it based on what actually happened. If I'm Bowman I still move Sharp to whoever to get some cap relief so I can keep Kane and Toews, since they are likely to do more him for years to come than what Sharp can do for the next 2 or even 3 years.

You've got this all wrong, Chicago won last year. It's LA's turn. They'll win on the back of Vinny Lecavalier, who resurrects his career after everyone laughed at LA for acquiring him.

That is also possible. Sutter finally gets Lecavalier after years of trying and resurrects him with love. That works too.

Pro-rated he was still on 20+ goal and 50+ point pace. Yes his contract meant that not every team could be in on him but that doesn't really excuse the return IMO. It's not like Sharp is suddenly a garbage player. Lo and behold he's got 38 points in 47 games this season and could hit 30 goals yet again.
Not sure why people are making excuses for Bowman on this one. It wasn't a good trade at all. 30 goal scorers are worth 6 million, he should have been able to get a better return during the offseason.

Well I don't know what to say. Normally I agree with what you have to say, and you're usually pretty spot on. I just really disagree with you on this one.

Disagree Fire...IMO, As Sharp was a pure Salary Dump move, Stan is CORRECTING having taken salary and older players back...I would have liked straight up Sharp for picks or mid-level prospects to begin with.
There is only $25k difference in sal cap on the move for THIS season, but it saves $900K for NEXT season, as Garbutt would still be under contract, where Sekac will be an RFA with rights controlled by the 'Hawks. If Sekac doesn't stick, the 'Hawks need to find money to re-sign RFAs, Danault and Rasmussen, who have both looked promising, and also, RFA penalty killer and defensive Center Marcus Kruger, whose loss is demonstrated by the 'Hawks PK dropping off a little after he went down...
It then looks like Panarin will get some of the cash freed up from Bickell's $4.5M, as Panarin becomes an RFA as Bickell's awful contract expires after next season, as the longer term plan.
