B.C. kind of fell arse backwards into the film industry and tech start ups which in the last twenty odd years have reduced dependence on forestry to a degree.
When I got here in '85 a drop in the price of lumber was a disaster and made front page headlines here, these days it's barely noticed outside of the interior.
I think the important thing for a government to do is not try and invent a sector, but see what develops organically and encourage it with education programs etc.

BC was actually a pioneer in using refundable tax credits to lure tv and film production and benefited from a first mover advantage.

No disagreement there but the development of a film industry was pretty much luck, Altman shooting McCabe and Mrs Miller up on Grouse (or Cypress mountain) back in the early seventies, proximity to LA, a cheap dollar, surly and uncooperative municipalities and unions in LA making shooting there a head ache. The government had no way of creating any of that but what they did was encourage what was already happening, the tax breaks, also opening up offices in LA to enable producers to clear tax and permit hurdles easily down there.

BC has been lousy at tourism though, it's a sector that does well in spite of the governments poor handling but could do way better.

Within Canada, film is just as much of a boom-bust-boom industry as oil. It is largely dependent on our dollar being crap.

Less so in BC, we were doing very nicely when the dollar was at par, it's obviously going gangbusters now. The government dropped the tax credit a few years ago, which everyone thought would kill filming, it didn't even slow down.

BC has more variety for filming as well. The only stuff that gets filmed in Alberta are westerns (Hell on Wheels), mountain scenes (Revenant), and small-town set show (Fargo).
The last major motion picture actually filming in our urban core must be like Superman III in 1982. I can't remember anything else. Vancouver on the other hand, has played almost every other major western city in the world.

For balance's sake, it would actually be nice for Alberta to further develop industries that do well when the dollar/oil is down. It would help to keep things a little less bipolar around here.

The opening scenes of Steven Seagal's epic Exit Wounds was filmed in Calgary. Snow Day was filmed in the city. That's all I can remember of the top of my head though.

Uhh, hello.. Rad was filmed here in 1986. That's more major than anything filmed in Vancouver.
Full list of tv and movies, there are plenty.

I hate to interrupt the great O&G discussion, but oil is up over $30 currently with a lot of green on the market.

Not sure if this goes here or in the ISIS thread but, they are starting to attack terminals and pipelines.

We don't want a recovery this way.
Edit; looks like this has been going on for a couple of weeks already

Oh, absolutely. And Thomas Lukaszuk, as he was wont to do, was a disaster for Alberta's film and theatre industry. It is worth building up as an industry, but it is also one that will suffer greatly when the dollar gains value for the same reason any other industry that relies on people does: our labour force is expensive.

Basically professional services that create solutions with consultants paid in CDN dollars helps amount to this. US, Asia and Europe-based clients look to how much further their dollar goes in things like IT projects. Canada can provide very high-quality services at a value price.
