That really resonates on the hypocrisy of the situation, I like and respect McGrattan because I know a bit about him, he played on the team that I support but I'm sure hes done this to other people and I was probably at one time one of those mindless idiots cheering because "who the hell is that guy? Screw him! My guy won!"

Until 'that guy' is your guy.

This is crazy.

No issues with the people who cheer as soon as the punch is landed and the fight over. The longer the person loudly cheers after the fact, the bigger the ######bag they are. Hope Big Ern's okay.

That's McGrattan for you. Goes for it every fight. Not much defense, not afraid to take a few to land some. Kind of the anti Oiler fighter, no hugging or turning backwards.

He lost two fights as a Flame that were similar but not as bad. One to Orr and one to Boogaard. Just took one nasty shot.

Hope he bounces back healthy.

That said I hope he's okay and has a full life after hockey once he's done. Too many of these guys have had pretty short and miserable lives once their career is done....another reason I don't cheer for fighting in the first place. You can't abhor the effect when you endorse the cause.
There's a difference between cheering a knockout and continually cheering a guy who doesn't move for almost a minute after nearly getting his skull cracked open on the ice

It is possible to enjoy fighting without enjoying incdents like this

What's the point of a fight like this? McGrattan will never see the NHL again anyways. Useless fighting needs to be banned, if not, I hope the NHL gets sued for millions.

It is possible but completely hypocritical, as long as you can admit that.

That is the point of fighting. To knock down or knock out your opponent with punches to the head. I sometimes think we are some of the dumbest beings on this earth. To enjoy something like fighting is not normal and shouldn't be normal.

That was really tough to watch. I hope he's ok. Time to hang them up. He has a young family, and, I'm sure a career ahead as a councillor/mentor/public speaker.

And if he hit 400gp in the NHL, a pension.

Nope. 317 career NHL games played.

I believe it's been changed to 160 games played so he'd qualify. I'm not sure when a player is eligible to collect it though.

As for Brian he's taken a lot of punches and I believe it gets harder to take a punch the more you get hit. I think he should hang them up as well.

no kidding, besides major injuries from fights are rare...obviously the people cheering after the initial knockout are idiots but that doesn't represent the average hockey fan that enjoys a good scrap. I don't like seeing guys crash into the boards but I love the pace of the game and wouldn't want it slowed down to prevent injuries. Glad Brian is okay

That was tough to watch - and the cheering after the fact where it was clear he was in trouble is sickening. A really bad example when herd mentality goes wrong.

I hope there is no lasting damage and that when he does hang up his skates he comes back to Calgary and enjoys a good living.

If he wasn't a fighter he would have never seen the NHL in the first place...if you are worried about the NHL getting sued you better take hitting out of the game too

Would it be hypocritical to enjoy hockey but not the injuries? It's a sport where guys with literal blades on their feet throw their bodies at speed at other guys to launch them into solid walls of hard plastic, aluminum and glass to gain possession of 6 oz of frozen rubber so they can fire it at another human being at 90+ mph while others throw their selves on the ice to block said frozen rubber with their mostly unprotected knees, ankles, hands and faces.

If you ask me fighting sounds safer than actually playing hockey

Glad to hear Brian is ok. But I have to say as a former golden glover that was a nice chin shot, good straight wrist with nice follow threw, Even Brian would appreciate it.

Anytime you get two large men throwing them hard this can happen. people need to realize that there is little to no difference between a chin/jaw on a 170lb man and a 250lb man.

I agree that it seems unneccesary for him to take these risks at this stage of his carreer, but it also seems like people who think that Brian McGrattan is winding down, floating silently into retirement are wrong. He's been putting up a bunch of points and has five fights this year, so I'd say he's trying real hard to earn himself one last shot at the NHL. I guess this incident makes it that much harder though.

He has 8 points... not sure I'd call that a bunch, seems right in line with what he usually does in the AHL.
