This is basically going to be the rest of the season if I had to guess. Streaky in two directions and ending up with a 5-7th draft pick.

Watching guys like Colborne, Rayomd, Wideman and Hiller can be painful at times, but let's face it......when this team has a legitimate shot at a deep playoff run those guys will be long gone.

Add a stud froward through the 2016 draft, shore up the defensive depth a bit (preferably with guys that are already in the system) and figure out a long term solution in net. That's what I really care about moving forward.

The future is still pretty bright.
Well we do have a 22 year old top 10 scorer and clone of Pat Kane.
A 21 year old 2-way center that's already put up 30 goals.
A 19 year old that's on pace for 20 goals and has the tools to be a franchise "power" forward.
A 25 year old d-man that is quite possibly the best skating defenceman in the league and on the cusp of being in the Norris conversation.
A 22 year old 6'4 d-man with all the tools to be a perennial top 2 in the league in the future.

Many teams would kill for that core moving forward. Unfortunately all good things take time to come together. I think the Blackhawks and Blues between 2006-08 are good comparables to this team and core right now.

Yeah the future is pretty glowing if I do say.

I'm starting to wish Hartley would play the other goalie after a win sometimes (even though hiller lost the last one). He seems to ride his goalies into the ground when they are hot, but hello that's not the answer to winning more games sometimes. Gotta keep these guys fresh and confident, ughh

If they could somehow snag a top 3 pick this summer that would be huge. I still think this team needs to figure out the goaltending moving forward. Ramo has played well in stretches, but is he a longterm #1 guy? I don't think so. Hiller has been pretty bad. Gillies and Ortio are still huge question marks. They need to find a bonafide #1 guy that will be around for a few years. Easier said than done, but they need to do it, somewhere, somehow.

This sounds reasonable and that the Flames know that this group of guys is not enough to get us where we need to be in the long term. It's probably evaluation time for a lot of players.

Pulling the goalie when we have neither the puck or our only effective scoring line on the ice...

Just Hartley things.

This is true. There are some good chances out there to take. I mean Talbot looks decent behind the Oilers, I'm sure he'd look at least twice as on our team.

Default Hartley Making Bad Player Choices

Hartley did a great job coaching last season, but is making bad choices most games this season.

1) Continues to play Wideman far too many minutes. Personally I would place him on waivers and bring up Nakladah and actually play him for at least 5 games. There is a 0% chance of Wideman getting claimed and it would be wonderful if he did. I truly believe his wide shot and total lack of mobility and speed has been one of the biggest factors in our poor pp performance this year.

2) This team does not have faith in Hiller and and never will as they know that he can rarely make a big save. As a result they are reluctant to go on the offensive and will continue to do poorly when Ramo is not playing. His performance in Edmonton was better than normal, but I believe we win that game and tonight's game with Ramo. Any more than 2 or 3 games over the remainder of the season is too much.

Colborne should not play on the pp and should be relegated to the 4th line.

Hudler needs to sit until he is completely healed as he appears to be still injured. Jooris needs to play ahead of Raymond and Stajan. As much as I like Stajan his face offs have been poor lately and I believe Jooris adds more to the team.

There is one positive to losing this game:

The Montreal Canadiens are no longer in a playoff spot.

I wouldn't mind the Flames targeting Antti Raanta in the off season. IIRC he's a UFA and has played well for both CHI and NYR.

The Devils are a perfect example of what a goaltender can do for your team.

11 goals scored in their last 8 and one of the least productive teams offensively in the league with an aging roster, yet sitting in a playoff spot. A Schneider/Holtby/Bishop would be the biggest help to this team, more so than a stud RWer or d-man.

Here's hoping that is Jon Gillies in the future.

Still exciting times are on the horizon as they just need to keep adding quality pieces through the draft and getting that high pick ensures a better chance of getting another Monahan/Bennett type player for this franchise.
The plus side is there is no pressure, they can evaluate Gaudreau, Bennett, Monahan and try to pick up players that will complement them. If we can find a player that makes Bennett better or that can complement Johnny's skill set we could start to become a more complete hockey club.

I know some people are harping on Hartley but give him a few more key pieces and move out the ones that don't fit and I bet he takes this club a lot further.

Two factors to GA, in no particular order

1. Team D
2. Goalie

Ramo wouldn't have stopped the Oilers' goal either. The shootout is a coin toss but the way Talbot played the Oilers would have probably won it anyway. The Flames needed to end that in OT when they had their PP.

Tonight Ramo possibly stops the second goal which I thought was horrible but I doubt he stops the first either and it's hard for any goalie to stop the third goal after having your defenseman pushed into you and have it allowed anyway.

Yep the single most important position will have to be addressed. With Price/Schneider/Lundqvist/etc we'd be in a playoff spot. Too soon to turn it over to Gillies although maybe in 1-2 years if everything goes well?

Goalies aren't terribly hard to find if you scout them well. I'm not convinced Ramo is the answer although maybe he can be one of our two guys. I think Ramo is a below average starter. Hiller has to go, he's not the answer. Ortio doesn't seem ready even though he seems to think he is.

Here's hoping our scouts find a hidden gem in Europe or the AHL or we capitalize on somebody's excessive goalie depth.

I haven't been hard on Wideman like most here but WOW. Pure crapola tonight. Great setups for him all night and he mosies around making stupid plays or shooting it right into the shins. So ready to move on from this guy.
