				 Post Media layoffs

There's been a massive amount of layoffs for the media outlet today, the only Calgary person I recognize so far is George Johnson:
 George Johnson @GeorgejohnsonCH · 3m3 minutes ago
So, after 34 years covering sports in Calgary, it's over. Am I sad? No. Bitter? Yes. Very. Condolences to all others affected by the carnage

 Anyone else affected by this?

Mods, I think this is somewhat hockey related as Johnson has been a fixture here for years. Please move if you think otherwise.

Shouldn't he be sad, but not bitter? It's a changing industry, they seriously couldn't see this coming?

The basically fired the entire National Post sports section. Calgary and Edmonton have apparently been cut the most.

Getting laid off by a company that just gave its execs big bonuses? I'd be bitter about it.

Johnson has been the resident Flames crank for a while. Will be missed though.

These newspapers could never generate enough compelling content in the internet age. Even the online subscriptions are pointless when half the content is articles copied from Bloomberg newswire and Reuters.

Yeah it sucks. Johnson was easily one of the best in the city.
Sadly this is going to become more common, especially in the sports media.

Lots of writers, many with the same view points, and sadly the are contributing to their own demise since they distribute 90% of the content they produce on items such as twitter.

A good friend is the editor in chief of a daily newspaper. He's already lost one job in Ontario due to cuts so he moved to Alberta. He says every obituary represents a lost reader. Younger folks don't read papers like their parents did.

Wow. No way! Is he sure?

Seriously though. They paid bonuses of $1M to their executives for the Sun deal, who I'm sure they're desperate to keep in a dying industry that's leaking talent. These current cuts save them $5M+.
There are a TON of people who are good hockey writers. Not so many people who are good at running media companies.

It's easy (and understandable) to point at Godfrey's pay. But the real lesson of #postmedia is that media companies need good owners. (1/3)

#postmedia has the worst combination: weak ownership and an awful capital structure. No newspaper biz can support that kind of debt. (2/3)

#Postmedia 's last quarter: $19.4-mn in operating profit, $18.7-million in interest expense. That's all you need to know. (3/3)

I hope Johnson lands on his feet quickly but 34 years is a good run in any profession.

He can be bitter, but I imagine hes going to get an unreal payout.
