You can not force the public to vote the way you want it to. They should have a list of players to choose from if that is what they wanted. Free for all is free for all (especially if that is how the organizer designed it). Is he deserving as an NHL player, NO. Is he deserving by the system that was set up. YES.

This is where I'd disagree and would love to see actual numbers.
For every fan vote I'm betting there was 100+ trolls/bot votes. That's why its not a fan vote. its a 'for the lolz' vote.

John Scott can't hold a roster spot in the NHL, that is why he is ineligible to play in the AS game. The Coyotes have been trying to get rid of him for a lnng time, they shouldn't be forced to keep him on their roster.
Nobody was voting for Scott because of his skill, they were voting to make the AS game into a circus where they could laugh and clap at the big clown trying to keep up to the good players all the while patting themselves on the back for creating the spectacle. Ever since he has been voted in he gets to answer questions daily about how it's a big joke that he got voted in when he isn't talented enough to get there on merit. Nobody was doing this to help Scott, the outrage now that he's somehow been wronged should be directed at the people who were mocking him as well as the game.

No one, including John Scott, claims he deserves to be there based on talent, but he was voted in, legally, under the voting rules the NHL established.
So why not take advantage of this unexpected turn of events to use John Scott's experience to give the fans a players view of the All Star experience?
John Scott is Everyman. He may as well a rec hockey league player. He may as well be one of us. He's not an NHL All Star. He's an outsider.
I think it would have been awesome to view the whole All Star experience through his eyes NHL 24/7 style. Behind the Scenes. Inside Access.
So poorly handled by the NHL and possibly a missed opportunity to boot.
|
This. The NHL just can't grasp opportunities. Must be a horrible marketing department. 24/7 was terrible this year compared to others. Nothing can beat Boudreau's swearfest. They have had shows on Oilers and Canadiens but how bout the Flames. Here is a team that made the 2nd round last year, has Gaudreau, Bennett, Monahan and Brodie and the coach of the year who is a quote machine and nobody can build a show around this?
Scott having a blast at the all-star game voted in by the people is an amazing marketing opportunity for a corporate event and the NHL has to purposely flush it down the toilet.

So the NHL voting can't determine who is a bot and throw those votes out? Wasn't there an 'are you a real person" captcha test? Is the website designed by a 5 year old?

That would maybe be true if fans had voted in a blue collar grinder who everyone loves.
But they didn't
They voted in a guy who's only made news for hurting people. Arguably the worst player in the NHL (or at least was).
The league can't make him the face of the league.

The league shouldn't have named him captain last week then.Just kybosh it from that point.
The NHL could have done this correctly 99 out of 100 ways. They chose the 1 wrong way.

You complain about the product so much, why even watch? Your opinion seems to be that the game is boring and the NHL is corrupt/incompetent. Why not vote with your wallet and stop watching?
I'd say the NHL is pretty smart here. They got what they wanted and they know they won't lose people like you anyway. And even if they did, I doubt they would even notice their Scrooge McDuckian vault taking a hit.
If anything, all this is great PR for the league. Both the joke vote and the ridiculous outrage. I bet this is the most viewed all star game in years with how much it's being talked about. All you people that are mad are probably going to contribute to higher ratings and more money for the league. Bettman and his cronies are probably laughing their asses off right now as they light their cigars with 100 dollar bills.

They didn't have to. He's cleared waivers every month this season pretty much, so him being demoted should have been expected.

Can't blame the Coyotes at all for wanting to distance themselves from this. They are a joke as it is, I'm sure this is the last thing they wanted as an organization. It's not like they had a say in there being a fan vote. If I was the owner/management of the team I would've neutralized the situation as well.

off topic, here's a rant.
Because I love to watch hockey and don't like it being burnt to the ground. Yes I'm still a paying customer that the NHL will never lose. I just wish they would improve things to get more fans and get more games on tv, get more behind the scenes shows, more everything hockey. I see what other sports are doing and wish hockey were the same. Curling is on all day all the time. Starting tomorrow TSN will show the Australian Open on 4 channels for 12 hours a day with one unpronounceable name playing another unpronounceable name.. Why can't they (or anyone) show hockey like that? Why is there no junior hockey on tv? Why is there no college hockey on tv? Why are games blackouts? Questions!

Agreed, but the NHL has handled this in probably the worst way possible. They've already had several fan votes get out of hand in the past few years, yet they've done nothing to fix the issue. All they needed to do was either remove write in votes, or change the criteria for who's eligible to be voted in (pretty much any meaningful criteria you make removes John Scott)
Even though they took no preventative measures, they still could have fixed this by refusing to name Scott a captain and make up some reason why he's not eligible to go. It would have been lame but it would have been far better solution than the ####-show this has turned into. The NHL really looks like an inept organization in all of this

I don't really care, Im just impressed at how the NHL pulled this off and entertained by how many much emotional investment has been put out here that I feel like mocking them now. Kind of like how they are mocking John Scott

Even if this is true, what does it matter? They aren't losing even one fan over this.
The NHL cares about money, that's it. They care about integrity only to the point where it hurts the bottom line. Just like all of Corporate America.

when the Scott vote starting gaining momentum just announce that from this point on write-in votes are no longer allowed. People might have yelled for a day but they would have been outnumbered and then it's over.

and to add to this. Right now NBC is showing soccer and NBCSN is showing hockey. That makes me mad.
