I don't want him penciled in, but he's a top 6 RH RW (with good size), which we don't have. He's something we don't have.
Forget about his chemistry at BC, that's irrelevant. He's simply something we don't have in the lineup

What?
Ferland has 4 total career goals.
I'm one of the posters who likes Ferland and thinks he could have a Lance Bouma level season at least a couple of times in his career but he's a bottom 6 player.
Hayes is a top 6 player.

I really don't think NYR is going to trade a player because he's going through a sophomore slump. If anything, this will help them sign him to a reasonable bridge deal.

Premature to say what Ferland 'is' either way at this point. If he continues to play like he has on that line and continues to own the front of the net on the power play, he will be a top 6 forward.

ugh, nonsensical homerism.
If he can't produce goals and points he's not a top 6 player.
David Moss used to own the front of the net on the powerplay.

If you can't acknowledge that Ferland is far from a finished product, then you're the one being nonsensical.
Is it likely that he will top out as a bottom six forward? Yeah, sure. Does he have top six potential? Yup.
To already peg him as a for sure bottom six David Moss is nonsensical contrarianism.

Hayes has 24 goals in 120 games playing with superior players and more minutes.
Ferland has never had an opportunity to be a top 6 player in the NHL. Maybe give him a chance, he's looked decent in the 2 games he's played.

I think we are just starting to see who Ferland is. The guy can show off some pretty smooth hands at times, I think with confidence and time in on the top line might just lead to a lethal player for us down the stretch.

I predict flash eating some serious crow about Ferland by the end of the season.

Ferland has looked every bit the top 6 winger in the few opportunities he has had so far. Obviously he needs to do it for a lot longer to prove anything. But to say he doesn't have that potential, seems premature.
As for Hayes - irrelevant that Ferland looks good on the line. If Ferland turns out to be the answer for Gaudreau's line - awesome! Then we can put Hayes with Bennett.
Bottom line is, our RW depth includes Hudler and Jones - and it is entirely possible that neither of them are here to finish the season. We need multiple RWs, and we need size.
There is all kinds of room for Hayes on this roster - regardless of what Ferland becomes.

I think we've become accustomed to not having any RW depth. Ferland + Hayes still gives us a weak roster on RW, but substantially improved from what it is now.
Doesn't have to be Hayes, but we had a few glaring holes last offseason, one of them being RW. And it wasn't completely addressed. After goaltending, it's the most important hole to fix before 16-17 starts.

I can't imagine that he will be traded. If we didn't trade Cammy because the return wasn't adequate, trading Hudler is much worse right now. There have been a few comments about trying to trade him for a 1st........I'd value him closer to a 3rd right now, and that's only if he gets back in the next few weeks and proves that he's recovered.

Way too early in his career to put his ceiling at bottom 6 forward. Are you not watching the kid closely? His hands are actually very soft and he makes some fantastic passes.
I wouldn't trade Ferland for Hayes straight up. I think Ferland could have the better career.
Some of you are seriously underrating Ferland's upside. He has Lucic upside for sure.

Ferland had some offensive pop in Junior, but a lot of tough guys do. I'd be pleasantly surprised if Ferland could bring his offensive game around in the NHL, but it will be a very large surprise.

He has 4 goals in 60 games and is turning 24 next month. At this point, I would lean towards the bottom six side, but anything is possible. Bouma never showed any offence until last year, in which he scored 16 goals. And Bouma never got close to 100 points in junior like Ferland did.

Ferland is just getting an opportunity to play an offensive role now after 60 games of sporadic bottom 6 duty. He's matured, is more disciplined and his skills and skating put him as possible top six material. Let's just wait and see, both scenarios are possible.
He's a fantastic skater, and he has good hands and IQ. Bouma has stone hands not a good comparable at all.

Lucic upside?
Come on man, you've gone off the deep end.
Lucic was a 40 point player in his second year in the league. He was a menacing physical player every night (and not just in one 6 game series) and was fighting some of the toughest guys in the league. He scored 8 goals as a rookie getting rookie-callup minutes. As a 19 year old. Ferland will be 24 by the end of the season.
This is ludicrous hyperbole.
Ferland is a bottom 6 player on one of the worst teams in the NHL and other than a few instances hasn't shown any kind of offensive flair at the NHL level. It is likely he will continue to improve as a player, but until he scores say, 10 goals in a season, he's not going to be a top 6 player, even on a bad team like Calgary.
This is facepalm level hyperbole that I'd expect from Oiler fans about their latest and greatest. Josh Freakin' Jooris has more goals than Ferland THIS YEAR, and has a greater impact physically than Ferland has this season as well. In less games. In Ferland's first 60 games, he has 4 total goals. In Jooris' first 60 games, he had 12, aka, 3x as many. From the fourth line.
I'm seriously embarrassed for some of the posters around here. HF Boards level insight.

Flash, that's a long winded way to say you don't really understand player development. Hartley has had some good words for the guy, and let's remember the cold streak Bennett was having while playing good hockey anyways. Ferland also had 5 points in 9 games in the playoffs. You're really going off the deep end on this one
