Too bad.
That's on the NHL to make sure that doesn't happen next time if they don't want that. The player shouldn't be made to suffer for that. It's flat out unfair for Scott to be punished and rejected from going to the ASG for a flawed NHL voting system being exposed by people, no matter how ####ty at hockey Scott really is, even though he is.
This is the NHL's fault and they should accept that and deal with it next time.

So did MTL owe the NHL a favour or does the NHL owe them one?
Thing is the allstar game isn't really a fan event anymore. It's a corporate meet and greet. Nobody is sending a rep to the allstar game so that they can meet with John Scott. They might send a rep + small camera crew (but the crew was probably rented) to film Gio and Johnny for some bags of cash, but how do you market John Scott?
I don't like Scott being forced out, but I imagine that the NHL wants to keep this as an exclusive sales club.

As for the argument about the PA, since Scott was announced as voted in, and attending, and, a captain, by the league, and has not pulled out on his own, if he doesn't get an all star bonus, then the PA can probably step in.
And yeah, while I won't put this at Bettman's feet, the Habs certainly have a couple favours coming to them from the NHL office. Sounds like the Coyotes acted linked dinks here to. Scott held all the cards here, and rightly or wrongly was going to hold up his end of the bargain, except the NHL decided to play with a new deck, a couple weeks after announcing all the cards were dealt. Poor.

Exactly. That's why the NHL has to honour what has happened. Yes, I would've preferred Scott not to be voted in either, but that's what had happened. Just accept the fact that Scott was voted in regardless of 'trolls' or 'real fans', honour those votes and let it be, no matter how ridiculous it may be.
If they don't like this, TOO BAD. Just change the rules for next time. Don't piss on the votes AND Scott now just because he doesn't deserve to be there on sheer talent and skill.
What the NHL has done here STINKS. Changing the rules after the due, fair process of what they indicated was fine and dandy before which was the fan voting.

I would wager the Coyotes and even his fellow players weren't happy he was going to represent their team. In fact I bet he had little player support across the league. He's a thug

Doesn't matter.
The problem is the NHL indicated this was all fine enough for this ASG before hand, yet now have basically done an about face and decided no it's not okay and are totally taking a great big piss on both the people who voted Scott in (fairly & squarely) and of course Scott himself.
This is wrong of the NHL to accept this to happen, and it doesn't matter how many people would rather see the skill (I included) over this guy. Honour your previous process, he was voted in fairly. You don't like it. Change the process next year so it doesn't happen again.

And? The thing is the NHL didn't like the outcome and changed the rules. The only guy that gets screwed here is John Scott and I think that is a shame. Basically Arizona and Montreal colluded to shaft him so that the NHL wouldn't have to deal with him being at the All Star Game. That's ridiculous.

From what I have heard he is a well-liked teammate. If you ever see him give interviews he is a big goof. These enforcer types always seem to be the most popular guy on every club.
I doubt the players care who represents their team. I would wager they rather have the weekend off than the All-Star bonus.

Ok, well not John Scott per say. But non-scoring players. There's certainly a bias in the all star selections towards point producers, even though there's players vital to any locker room and line-up despite their point totals.
There's also those who want fighting to remain in the game. Maybe this was a silent protest to league mandate?

If I paid good money for a ticket to the All Star game (For whatever reason), I would be legitimately pissed off that a bunch of idiots (Most of which were non NHL fans on Reddit) voted in a plug
The fans who are watching for free on TV aren't the only ones affected by this stupidity

if i had bought a ticket to the allstar game, it would have only been to watch John Scott. So, I'd be legitimately pissed off that the league had ruined the experience by voiding his eligibility

I was going to say! I'd bet he'd get more interviews and attention than anyone other than the Nashville representatives.

I don't care about the game, I just think it's a shame that a man's life can be sewered for no fault of his own.
He doesn't get to go to the game, no bonus, goes to ahl, misses out on a career highlight, and worst of all - likely misses out on the birth of his twins (pregnant women at that stage can't fly).
I can't believe there isn't an unwritten rule among GMs that players expecting can't be traded/demoted. For shame Maloney.
Bettman is the perfect cartoon villain; pissed me off twice in one week. Can't wait to see him get booed again.

the part about missing out on the birth of his twins (we'll see how this plays out, wouldn't surprise me if he is given a permissible LOA by the team to be with his family during this team, thus... nothing to be pissed about) sucks.... but if his career highlight is that he is so bad, arguably the worst player in the NHL, and was choosen as a part of this hoax because he is so bad.... then thats really pathetic.
Oh and the way Bettman pulled this off, I'm actually kind of amused and impressed. Bettman for president!

Dear NHL,
While you are busy nullifying unintended consequences of troll vote campaigns, can you please arrange a trade of Rachel Notley and her MLA's for Brad Wall and his and then assign her to a seat on Moose Jaw town council? That'd be super.
Signed,
