That 2012 draft is turning into a hell of a disappointment.

Conroy/Feaster/Weisbrod said as much back then. It's why they took the home run swing on Jankowski.

It's definitely one of the worst in a long time and probably in a conversation of worst ever although I'm sure there are some years in past decades comparable or worse.

It's still not out of the realm of possibility that Jankowski turns out to be one of the better players to come out of the draft. The first overall pick would be a 3rd line winger on most teams. That's how bad it is.

And not the Teravainen kind. The Mason Raymond kind.

And John Weisbrod is looking more and more like a genius.

LOL Weisbrod sure gets a lot of credit for seeing 1 (or was it 2?) games, and Feaster no games.

I like how everyone is mentioned except the head scout who was the main guy for selecting Jankowski. Everyone else was just trusting their employees.

I just took a look at the stats. I know points aren't everything, but...

2012 draft: 8 players with 50 or more points in the NHL
2013 draft: already 7 players with 50 or more points in the NHL

2012: top 3 players in points have 97, 101, 131
2013: top 3 players in points already have 88, 124, 139

What a turd of a draft.

Feaster also mentioned Weisbroad wanted him to trade that pick until they saw Jankowski.

Their main target that year was Turris but I believe at the time Turris was moved Clagary appeared to have a top 5 pick and they had already traded their 2nd in 2012 draft in the Regehr deal

It's especially hard to compare this draft class to any other based off points since 8 of the first 10 picks were defencemen. Not saying it was a good class...but points is a pretty bad way to look at things.

Fair enough, do you then blame the scouts for Sutters picks?

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

I don't really go about blaming anyone for drafting, but if I were to then yes I would.

Meanwhile, Taylor Hall has played himself into the “going forward” group of Oilers Top 6 forwards, with an excellent season thus far.
That's the best part of the article. Perfect.

We conducted an informal, anonymous poll among a dozen NHL scouts, analysts and front office types on Friday, asking the simple question: “You can only have one of Nugent-Hopkins or Johansen. Which one would you choose?” (No employees of the Predators, Oilers or Blue Jackets were included in the poll.)

By deadline, nine had cast their vote. The result: Nugent-Hopkins 5, Johansen 4.
Good one. I don't mind RNH at all, but c'mon.

Hit the nail on the head. Draft class was skewed by how many d went in the top 10 and I recall the commentators surprised how the forwards slid. I guess the scouts did their homework.

Not to derail the thread but we were probably better off holding onto 14 and taking our chances with Girgensons, Ceci, Hertl or the TB goalie. One of those years where you hold your pick and take the bpa. Trading down for Sieloff probably won't pan out, due largely to his health struggles. But acquiring additional picks in a weak draft is a poor strategy. Hindsight is 20/20 and feasters gang was in love with Jankowski and may have picked him at 14 for all we know. That draft just makes me glad we have the management team we now have.

For forwards yes, but for defencemen, it looks like a pretty decent draft. Murray, Reilly, Dumba, Trouba, Ceci and Maata all looking like decent NHL players. The former 2 are just stuck on terrible teams. Reinhart isn't a total bust although he probably will be in Edmonton.

Then you have some of the later round picks like Severson, Gostisbehere, Parayko, Miller. Yes, it isn't a great draft, but I think plenty of teams picked up some decent defencemen.

It might end up being a decent goaltending draft as well, but we'll have to wait and see.

Also, I don't think most people are surprised that it was a weaker draft. Going back to 2012, I remember most people thinking that 2010, 2011, and 2013 were all going to be a bit better.

Rust never sleeps...and neither apparently do NHL GMs. Late night trade between PIT and ANA. Details to come.

Yep

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
ANA trades Carl Hagelin to PIT for David Perron and Adam Clendening.

I'm surprised Perron was that cheap.
