He refused to go away quietly. Now, he gets to spend the rest of the season in Newfoundland.

Had they done it before or during the vote, problem solved. But they chose not to. They earned this result. They should accept it and move on.

As Mirtle pointed out, the NHL said early on in this process that if Scott was voted in, they would let him play:
Quote:
The NHL, however, says it won’t block him from taking part in the game if he is voted as one of the four “captains” of the four division-based all-star teams.
“As long as voting is legitimate, we will honour the results,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said on Wednesday.

I am not sure that this can turn into a legitimate legal argument. Loophole closed before/after. Its a league special event.
Personally I am pleased to see this was done but the reaction should be interesting.

Team-mates are often friends and they have just witnessed their friend being forced to relocate himself for refusing to let his bosses backtrack out of mess of their own making.

The fans have been ignored and started a response that went viral. A player went along for the ride as he is entitled to do as an NHLer.
the NHL response is off side the rules it set up for its fans. There is a consequence. Rather than letting it go, they changed the rules and orchestrated a result behind closed doors, which many fans will find objectionable.
Let me put it this way - as a fan I'm more interested in seeing John Scott in the all star game today than I was yesterday because I think it's garbage that the NHL is pulling a stunt like this.
|
Sorry man but I don't consider this any sort of protest against the all star game. Every all star game is a joke. It's for kids.
This was trolling and a darn good job of it. But let's not pretend it was anything more than that.
Hell it could have been done even more impressively. Vote for guys only named John or something. Get creative! This was just a repetition of Rory

Scott had no obligation to follow the League's wishes, and every right to refuse the request. He did nothing more than stand up for himself, and now he's getting shafted for having done so.
Like I said, if the NHLPA isn't all over this, it has no legitimacy as a union. This is exactly the kind of thing it's set up to prevent.

I don't get it.
I'm happy someone stepped in to fix this abomination.
I'm excited about the 3v3 tournament and seeing the best players in the league showcased. I was absolutely infuriated when John Scott was named captain of the Pacific division team. I thought "this is why we can't have nice things".
As someone who loves skill, elite talent, and the prospect of watching a very entertaining weekend of hockey related fan fare- I approve this collusion.

The NHL will probably convince him to bow out now and then fine him for not going.
I was against the JS selection but this is such bad form and extremely classless. I'm actually rooting for the guy now.
Bush league if they dont let him go now.

Seriously, if you care about hockey - enough that you know and care who goes to the All Star Game and are willing to take the time to prank it - this league despises you.

I'm sorry, but are you attempting to make the argument that the people that voted for Scott are the fans that 'care about hockey'?
lol

All star game is many things. A showcase of the league's best players is not one of them.

And you really think the league did not consult the PA on this, and do you think the PA is really going to go after the league for this? It's the ASG, its a game built squarely on marketing the game. The PA isn't going to go to bat for John Scott at the risk of belittling one of the biggest revenue generators the league has.
I find it completely odd that you're making such a stink for a player the Habs literally just acquired hours ago. It's kind of funny actually.

What's the NHLPA going to do? Scott was included in a trade and the new team is going to keep him in the AHL. Montreal is well within their rights to do so, and there is absolutely no way they could prove that this was done at the NHL's request. His contract is not getting voided, he will still be able to play hockey and get paid to do so. This is not a hill the NHLPA is going to fight for.

Based on the stink that this has raised, that's probably not a very accurate statement.

Thought this was pretty funny
Rob Tychkowski @Sun_Tychkowski 14m14 minutes ago So, NHL doesn't want Scott at the All Star game because it's ridiculous and he doesn't belong there, but the Coyotes can stay in Glendale?

He had no obligation to follow the league's wishes. The Coyotes had no obligation to keep him in Arizona.
What can the PA do? Players get traded all the time (well, not all the time, just the last week or so). Players clear waivers and get sent to the AHL all the time.
Scott has never played more than 60 NHL games in a single season, and has one season in his career where he scored more than 1 point, and that was 4 last season. It's not like he can really argue that he's being treated unfairly by being sent to the AHL.

I am glad this pile of crap got resolved. The vote was for hockey fans not for a bunch of idiots with keyboards, Scott should have respectfully bowed out.

Kind of curious where you think the NHLPA can fight this. Teams are free to assign players to the AHL under the terms of the CBA for any reason. The only condition is that some players need to clear waivers before being sent down.
