Oh yeah they can replace the bolts and any iron that needs to be replaced. Probably need to shut down the bridge while they do it though.

This is such a Canadian story. Haha. Dunno whether to laugh or cry.

Used to do the drive from Calgary to Winnipeg a lot from childhood to early adulthood. I remember the single lane TransCanada the news was talking about, in parts of the prairies, but I thought they finally twinned the whole thing. Is this not right? Anyone know?

Not that it would help this situation, just that I heard them say single lane in some places again on the news today.

It's not twinned from Kenora to North Bay or therabouts.

They have just started on Thunder Bay to Nipigon twinning.

The highway is twinned from Thunder Bay to about half way to Nipigon and the second half should be done by 2017 I believe but who knows up here. The highway is not twinned past Nipigon and it really can't be in most areas past there. For the most part, there isn't much twinned highway until you hit southern Ontario.

No problem with speculation, plenty of issues of those who talk with so much certainty that it's gotta be this or that causing the failure. When I have a guy who works as a chef on my facebook feed talking about expansion joints and post-tensioned cables like he's designed the bridge himself, I can't help but roll my eyes.

FWIW, I know plenty about roads but not nearly as much about bridges, so I ask my buddies who design bridges for their opinion instead.

The thing is the designers didn't do such a good job on this bridge, so second guessing is fair game. I admit I'm not a bridge designer but I've help build a dozen or so and can speak within my experience.

One possible solution if the problem is caused by updrafts is to replace the deck with grating.

Was it design or installation problems, though? I don't believe that has been or can be confirmed yet. I'll admit I don't know how a cable stay bridge would normally fail in a case like this, but it's a little early to be saying it's guaranteed to be a design issue over something improperly installed.

It appears that what's failed is the bolts. What has caused the bolts to fail seems to be the question? Currently they are testing the bolts.
