Joe Colbourne (aka Captain Killplay) needs to get it together or he will be out of the league next year.
Overall a good game with many positives. Sharks capitalized on our brainfarts, that was the difference.

Hey, at least we won the Corsi battle. No sense worrying about the loss when we win the stats battle, right? Lots of nice things tonight - Ferland, Bennett, Monahan, Johnny. Too many bad things. Oh well, let's see if we can stop the great 40+ year old on Wednesday.

No more Joe Colborne please. That guy is my new least favourite Flame. Absolutely useless and gets too much ice time. Maybe I'm just overreacting but I will shed no tears when he's gone.
Ferland looked great on the first line. Gaudreau and Monahan looked good. Bennett was great. Lots of positives but just a frustrating result.
Brent Burns is awesome. Hate to say it but that guy is a player.

4 straight losses against pacific division teams, at home. So much for Alberta being a tough place to play again, Calgary and Edmonton are back to being the basement dwellers in the west

Fun game to be at though! I'm 0-2 this year.

the Backlund-shaming is getting ridiculous.
1) He had a bad turnover early on. He managed to check his man and force him into a difficult, bad angle shot. Sharks got a lucky bounce.
2) He had 6 shots and 2 assists, was 55% on faceoffs, 57.14% possession.
3) He had a penalty. A soft call on a stick hold on what looked like a very good forecheck. The PK couldn't identify the most dangerous man out there on that power play. The other team scored on their first shot.
Was it his best game? No.
Was it his worst game or was he the worst player? Absolutely not.
Seriously guys. The sharks had three good scoring chances in this game. The Thornton Goal, the Ramo dive to stop the breakaway, and the Burns goal. The Flames were getting chance after chance after chance and they scored 4 goals. Ramo didn't let in any softies.
Most nights that's a win.
Sharks got some bounces, but take the positives out of this game. Namely that we dominated the opposition. That's way more important in the big picture.

Annoying loss. The Sharks seemed to get all the bounces. Even though Jones let in 4, I thought he had some spectacular saves and kept his team in it. Frustrating to lose when you outplay your opponent. But giveaways kill you at the NHL level and tonight was a good example of what happens.

Then there are wild redirections where you can be in perfect position and still have it get by you which was nothing more than bad luck on Ramo.
|
1. Not every goal Ramo allowed tonight would have required a lucky save to stop and he wasn't in perfect position on every deflected shot.
2. Not every big save Jones made tonight was clean. He stopped deflections too. Maybe not as crazy as San Jose's third goal but he did.
Ramo didn't lose the game for the Flames like he did many times earlier in the season but he didn't do anything to help them win tonight either. Jones on the other hand came up big when needed.

Colborne was AWFUL tonight. Two bad giveaways was the game - Colborne and Backlund.
Can't blame Ramo.

I didn't care for Gaudreau's game tonight, too many turnovers and way too predictable. He gets a pass because of the points but he was sloppy tonight.
Ferland continues to look good. Made plays, kept plays alive and was a presence in that line. Great work in front of the net. Did he get credit for the one goal?
Love Bennett's game. Loved the dust up at the end too. Kid has balls, hands and wheels, great combo. I would actually like to see him and Ferland on a line in the future, skilled, fast, tough, gritty. Awesome.
####ty loss, didn't deserve to win though. Need to step things up and get on a run. Hopefully Frolik helps.

Only a matter of time until one of the resident Backlund apologists showed their face. For me it has nothing to do with this game as I've been down on him for two seasons now. He's 26 and should be a veteran player that this team can count on but instead Gaudreau, Monahan, and Bennett are left to do the heavy lifting for this team. I'm tired of hearing the excuses every year for this guy as he's just not getting it done for this team and he's so frustrating to watch. I'm so hoping for Jankowski to turn out for this team so Backlund can be sent packing.

Personally thought Backlund had a great game.
2 assists, led the team in SOG with 6, and was creating a lot in the offensive zone.
Sure a bad turnover on goal 3 but he did recover well and if Kris Russell didn't decide to kick it top corner it was a routine save.
Much worse forwards (Colborne, Bollig, Stajan, Jooris) than Backlund tonight. Specifically Colborne who was awful and made every line he was on worse.
Edit: Forgot about the bad penalty but not like those are a habit for him. PK needs to bail you out every once in a while.

Yeah I didn't mind Backlund at the end of the day, 2 mistakes but also 2 assists and some strong play to get chances.
Just wish he could have buried one or else not taken the penalty at that time. San Jose hadn't had a shot in about 20 minutes it seemed.

The Flames will have an opportunity to clean house of some of the mediocre secondary players, especially if they continue to find ways to lose. Should have 6 points more from the Anaheim, Arizona and now SJ game than they do.
The fact that 5 of the top 8 players in this draft are RW and 4 of them are 6-3+ is a great consolation prize if the Flames can't get their act together.

I disagree with the first and last paragraph. I though Gaudreau was pretty good tonight and I don't know what more the Flames could have done to deserve a win. They outshot them nearly 2-1 and won the Corsi battle (if you care for that stat, personally I don't). Couple bad turnovers cost them but I felt they were far and away the better team and deserved the win.

I'm really not a Backlund fan, but outside of that terrrrrrrible giveaway, I thought he looked decent.
He doesn't have high end offensive instincts, otherwise he could have easily had two goals, but he made some nice plays.
