Default Jan 9 Practice: Frolik close to returning; won't play monday, Ferland on top line

@Fan960Willis:

lines at practice:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Bouma-Backlund-Jones
Bennett-Granlund-Jooris
Colborne/Raymond-Stajan-Bollig

Michael Frolik is practicing with #Flames for first time since injury. He's wearing a no-contact jersey.

If the Flames aren't going to go out and find a RW, I sure hope Ferland, Bennett and Frolik are the 3 that rotate that top line RW until Hudler is healthy.

Enough of Colborne and Jones. They just don't have the intensity and speed to play with Money and JG.

Yay it's about time we give ferland a shot up there for a full game. He's been improving steadily.

No to Bennett on rw. If anything he should play centre with ferland on his wing.

Frolik has been gone so long I'd almost forgotten about him.

Please just stick Bennett back at center. He was there earlier in the year and seemed to do fine.

I don't know if he did "fine". He was not very good Defensively. He also needs to get his leg strength up so guys can't push through him towards the net and also so he manages to stay vertical.

If putting him on the RW allows him to get more looks at the net and play his hi-tempo game with the guys he's going to be playing g with for the next 10 years, then give him some games on that RW.

Could be a nice shot in the arm, but at worst, nothing really changes.

After a decent first few games Granlund has really struggled in my opinion. The Flames are getting outplayed heavily at even strength when he is on the ice. I think they need to figure out if he can be a more effective winger. He's got a good shot and is a useful penalty killer so there may still be a spot for him.

Bennett should be playing centre. That's where the Flames will need him to be in the future and that's where the bulk of his ice time should be now, even if it comes with growing pains. Unsure why Bob isn't willing to give him the same rope he gave Monahan.

I'm glad to see them trying Ferly for more than one 3rd period, a period I thought that top line was getting some good looks late in that 3rd period!

I had hoped Colborne would've brought what I'm now hoping Ferland brings to that line - a big body to crash the net and make space for the other two. Colborne's alright at it but he hangs onto the puck like 3-4 sec too long then makes a dumb play to lose possession.

Derek Wills ‏@Fan960Wills

#Flames Frolik cleared for contact...was wearing yellow jersey so players knew not to hit him "too hard". Won't play Monday, but he's close.

100% agree with all of this.

Many posters say that when the Flames are hemmed in their own end, Russell is on the ice. I find that in that situation, Granlund is on the ice. And Bennett is sitting on his point man, just seemingly itching to get into the corner and battle for the puck like a C would but restrained as a winger.

I think they should put Bennett on the top line. He has the skill and smarts to play well with those guys and they all need to get some points so it is a win win

Put me in the camp for Bennet at center over Granlund. If Bennett is on the wing he needs a better Center.

Outside of the young guys, that forward roster looks pretty bleh.

It shows the need to keep rebuilding. A lot of the roster still needs to be turned over in the next 2-3 years.

In my mind Ferland can and will bring more than that if he keeps building his confidence. I get that these are junior but I think he has more scoring and playmaking talent than many people realize.
