The Ferland thing goes back to the failed logic of the handful of people who always do the same thing when it's rumoured good players are on the trade block.
"Oh I'd love it if the Flames could nab _______, but only if we could do so without giving up (names the top 5 and in this case top 7 players in our prospect pool)"
Again I don't know why these people don't just start off by saying "I don't think we should give up what it would take"... because naming guys like Ferland off limits (and I like Ferland a lot) is ridiculous when trying to dream up a package that could land a player like Drouin.

Ferland has something like 3 goals and 11 points in 58 NHL games. I know he had set backs in development due to injuries and personal issues, but at this point he would have to have almost unprecedented development to reach Lucic's level.

Disagree. He shows top two line power forward potential. If you watch closely you can see he's almost as skilled with the puck as our most skilled players. He has all the tools. Size, physicality, passing, shot, stick handling.
The sky is the limit for him. There are reasons why he developed slower than Lucic, I'm sure you're aware of them or can search for some of them on the internet.
I'd be surprised if he didn't develop into a top two line power forward that is how promising he is. I mean if you can't see it then you either aren't watching closely enough or ?

Yes, clearly this means that Ferland is basically on par with Drouin.

Drouin is also 3 years younger but has more NHL experience and points than Ferland. The sky is still the limit for Drouin, but with Ferland, he is probably pretty close to his peak potential.

Ferland has potential to be a great power forward, but I trade him for a similarly aged skilled guy like Drouin everytime. Ferland won't even get the discussion started. Guaranteed if the Flames are in its for the likes of Bennett or Hamilton. It isn't going to happen.

And Drouin has 2. Normally I love your posts but in this case I'm not sure what you're getting at. Both are young players that have far higher upsides than they've shown. Both aren't fully developed.
People want to keep Ferland because he has the potential to be one of the rarest commodities in the NHL, a power forward with skill. That ranks up there with big #1 centre and top pairing defenseman as some of the hardest things to find. There's a reason why every team wanted Lucic there for a while and teams like EDM were naming him as a type of player they need. Ferland has that potential.
I'd be very wary about giving him up. He's not quite untouchable for me but after Brodie, Gaudreau, Monahan, Gio, Hamilton and Bennett, he's the player in the organization I'd least like to move.

Ferland also didn't start playing organized hockey till he was 16 or 17. Also battled addiction, have we really seen what he can do yet?

Its silly to assume Ferland straight up would do it. So the comparisons between Ferland and Drouin straight up dont really apply. In hindsight if he was involved you would probably have to throw at least a 1st in there. Thats a lot to give up - some may still do that in a heartbeat, i dont. Drouin may or may not be great - time will tell.
Ferland is signed through next season. If he hasnt figured out how to put the puck in the back of the net trade him off next year or re-sign him for cheap again. With points hes a great top 9, without - a great bottom 6.
Im a big fan of Ferland.

Ferland doesn't have the hype or draft status behind him but every team would love to have him. There's a reason why another team's GM called him the best player in the AHL last year.
He's basically the only player in this organization that can be a power forward. His skill set is rare in the NHL nowadays. He skates, hits, forchecks, has decent hands and non-stop motor.
Now, should you trade Ferland for Drouin? an easy answer would be of course yes but for the Flames you should look at different options. The Lightning would want more then him anyways. Do you give up Ferland + whatever else it takes to add another small forward?
My point is Ferland + whatever else you may have to give up to get Drouin might not be worth it.
He is practising with the top line today so we'll see if he can take the next step.

Nope , but then again neither would Yzerman
I truly believe he will be a huge asset to our team in the future, whether or not he reaches his full potential (and what that is ) is the big "What if?"
but that "What if?" is the same question that dogs Drouin
I'll take the guy who is listening to his coach, and "buying in"
over the guy who doesn't appear to be "getting it" at the NHL level ,on a team that has done very well in the last two years with their coach.

No, but just because someone gets a late start doesn't necessarily mean they have more development time.
I certainly think Ferland has more to show, but it would be extremely optimistic to think he's even a 50 point guy. Drouin may bust, but it's fast more likely he is a quality top 6 or even top line player. His ceiling is elite

Why do you think that? There's absolutely no proof they do. In fact, the asking price suggests otherwise

Sorry I don't see it with Ferland. I think he is at best an adequate bottom 6 whereas Drouin has top line potential.

I would do a conditional 1st (switches to 2017 if the Flames are in the lottery) + Porier at most. If Tampa does not like that then you walk away.

A greaser fan friend of mine proposed Yak for Drouin. Would that be an even swap? Gotta think Droun has more potential.
Edit: I guess their production at the pro level is similar.

I don't even consider Ferland a true building block as he's a smidgen above Josh Jooris. His stats don't lie as he's not going to be an offensive player in the NHL.there is a whole whack of bottom six players in the NHL that have more offense of skill than he does.

Put me in the camp that "overvalues" Ferland and I'm fully willing to admit that I have rose coloured glasses on.
I think he is going to become the power forward this team needs going forward, and he is going to be all over the scoresheet. Absolutely love what I've seen from him from last year's playoffs into this season. He is poised to take the next step. The two things that have pushed me over the edge into full fledged homerism this year: his discipline, and his skating. The kid has been flying out there. He can move.
Ultimately I think him and Bennett are going to become a duo like Johnny and Monny.
Our top two lines are going to strike fear into opponents hearts.
