JANUARY 8, 2016, 6:53 PM
The National Women’s Hockey League released statements Friday regarding the health status of Boston Pride player Denna Laing who suffered a significant spinal injury at the Outdoor Women’s Classic on Dec. 31.

The statements were on behalf of Laing’s family, NWHL commissioner Dani Rylan, CWHL commissioner Brenda Andress, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens and the New England Patriots.
There was a Gofundme that was closed by the family. It looks like donations can now be made from her page.

That is so unfortunate. Fingers crossed for a recovery that leads to a self-sustained life in the very least.

Terrible to hear of this happening to high paid professionals -- but stings even more without the bank account to support your recovery.

anyone see or hear what happened?

Was she battling for the puck? Catch a rut? Hit from behind?

I'm really thinking about her and wishing her good luck in her recovery.

She stepped on a stick and lost her footing then crashed into the boards I believe.

From what I've been reading from people that were there, the "stepped on a stick" explanation was kind of an NHL misdirection.

The problem was actually bad ice and she hit a deep rut or something.

On another point, it was such a fail by the NHL that the game wasn't broadcast, the clock kept running through the injury, and the condition of the ice.

And now she's going to sue the NHL and the Patriots:

For unplayable ice? She stepped on a stick...

A horrible situation, and I feel for her. But this is the quickest way to erode sympathy. Outdoor games always have dodgy ice conditions. A part of the allure is unpredictable conditions indicative of classic backyard shinny.

Had she alerted anyone to her concerns of poor ice conditions prior to the game, or had she kept that information to herself and endangered her team-mates and opposition? If you had noticed unplayable ice that was so dangerous you believe it to be responsible for your injury would it not have been imperative that she notified someone responsible for their safety?

I just hate when people travel this route. I hope that it comes out that she had expressed her concern and it was ignored. I can get behind that lawsuit, and I really want to. But I doubt this is the case.

Think I'll sue the NHL too the next time I have a accident playing beer league hockey.

Good chance the lawsuit is not her choice but forced due to insurance reasons over her healthcare bills.

The NHL will likely settle out of court by paying for her medical treatment.

I am not entirely sure I agree with your statement. If there was a deep rut on the ice, I don't think it was up to her to skate around the rink looking for any bad ice-conditions. That responsibility falls on the ice-crew and ultimately whoever is responsible for that crew.

I feel like this situation would be similar to someone falling off a ladder at work. If the ladder has already been inspected by a maintenance person (in this case, the ice-crew should have done that), then there is nothing someone can do when climbing the ladder. If all of a sudden, the ladder collapses, I don't think the person should be responsible for their injuries because they obviously didn't know about the fault so how would they be able to express their concerns because sometimes its almost impossible to tell. I feel like bad ice is one thing but if there was a deep rut on the ice that was completely missed, that is a completely different story.

If she stepped on a stick, then I agree that it was a risk that she was taking while playing the game.

One would hope that's the reason.

I'm not entirely sure I do either TBH. Not that we will ever get the information, but the specifics she is accusing the NHL and Patriots of overlooking would really answer a lot of questions I have about the validity of her argument.

I'm always conflicted on this as well. If the ladder is inspected, I always think that whoever is going up the ladder accepts responsibility for the outcome.

As long as the ladder (or ice) is inspected and determined safe, I think the employer (or event organizers) have done their due diligence to ensure everyones safety. You have the option to inspect it yourself, and not doing so (I personally feel) is waiving your right to voice concern for yours and others' safety.

If something happens then that's just it. Something happened. You have all options to not go up the ladder at all (or step on the ice). Doing so SHOULD be a responsibility you accept.

Most people won't agree with that opinion, however. It does irk me how quickly everyone looks for blame and retribution. In reality, unfortunate things happen.

She did

I hope that's the case. I hate the thought of her thinking about grasping at who she can hold accountable.

I'm surprised she hasn't named USA Hockey yet. If they had let the Pride Olympians play, she wouldn't have been there.

I'm suing CP because I have carpal tunnel...

I hope she's ok and I hope this is like AC said and it's only to cover medical bills.

This could end all outdoor games. Too much risk.

Depends who wins. Even then, probably not; the NHL isn't going to cease to exist because of CTE. If Winter Classic's bring in x amount of money and exposure for the league, they won't stop it because of an accident.

This is all to say, if you were being serious with your point.
