Wideman is taking a whipping tonight. Honestly I thought Russell was worse defensively. If you pay attention to who's on the ice when we get hemmed in our own zone, I swear nearly half the time Russell is on the ice.

On that final rush with under 15 seconds to go I was kind of surprised Gaudreau didn't toss the puck in front. I mean, I get it - he's confident and probably thought he could win the battle or get a wraparound executed - but what does it say when he doesn't trust who's out on the ice with him? Toss it on net and hope for a bounce at that point...

That'll hurt the playoff chances.
Didn't think Wideman or Colborne were as bad as some have said. Raymond was frustrating as usual though.
Bennett and Ferland are really turning the corner IMO.

I've had serious doubts about the staff going back to the pre-season. This isn't some knee-jerk opinion.
While execution is certainly a factor in game outcomes, Hartley's regime has been dogged by ineffective shot-block-first defensive structures, terrible offensive-zone entries, baffling player-usage and poor shot-suppression AND shot-generation. Flames have had both the worst PP and PK in the league this season.
The coaching staff ought to face some valid criticism.

I understand the Russell criticism, but it really seems like its all Monahan For Mayor talks about, and in every thread.
How long until he comments in the Regehr retirement thread about Russell?

With respect to coaching:
Positives- the coaching on this team seem very good with young players, motivating, staying positive, actually developing and making them better.
Negatives- the group seem reluctant to adapt. It's now obvious to me (and if it's obvious to fans......) that the way to beat the Flames is to slow the game down, play a nice neutral zone trap and force the Flames to dump it in because they rarely retrieve it and if they do, they struggle to keep it in the zone and sustain pressure. If teams don't clog up the neutral zone, the Flames activated defencemen create plays and become all of a sudden offensive threat. To me anytime Calgary plays a sound defensively minded team they get torn to shreds. But the most concerning thing is the fact that the coaching staff a) either can't figure this out or b) don't know how to adapt- which is brutal.
Monahan-
I know he got a point tonight and I know this season he is on pace for close to what he got last year, but he just isn't doing it for me this year. He is embarrassingly soft for a guy his size, like he's afraid to get injured and miss that big contract. It's garbage and quite frankly, he needs to pull his head out of his ass.
Wideman, not as bad, not even close to as bad, as what everyone on this site thinks. At the end of the game, he held the puck in the zone 3 times. He is an offensive defenceman, and I think he's effective at that, but poor defensively. But- his partner should be covering for him as well and as mentioned, his partner was not good tonight.

Let in two goals, both deflected shots from well out and the defense is the most in question tonight?

Brutal game frustrating to watch. Yotes are definitely the Flames of this year as they own the Pacific division, have a couple young studs, and play a hard consistent game.
I wonder if the potential contract negotiations are getting to Monahan and Gaudreau as both have looked off since Christmas. Bennett should be given a shot on that line. Colborne looked bad on the top line so glad Bob moved him.

I give the Yotes credit - they outworked the Flames and won most of the board battles. Add in that they dominated in key faceoffs, and the Flames were chasing the puck all night.
But if this loss means no more Colborne on the top line, it will have been worth it

That was as prototypical as you can get for a Coyotes road win. Find a way to get a lead...frustrate the hell out of your opponent and completely shut down any attack. Tippett hockey at it's best/worst.
The Flames could have been better, yes, but the Coyotes executed their game plan very well tonight.
And on another note, this board is pretty insufferable to read after a close and competitive loss to a team that is roughly as good as the Flames. It's like everyone feels the Flames are owed a win even before puck drop? Weird.

Is it time to take Monahan off the untouchable list? I ask that seriously.

Monahan, second youngest on the team, playing top line opponents on a nightly basis. His ceiling has no where to go but up. No need to give up on him yet.

My take, honestly, is that he's playing like a guy that everything went to his head. Like he doesn't have to work for it anymore. An arrogance of sorts. Time to get engaged. Throw a hit. Rough it up. Push people after the whistle, act like you give a crap. Get mad. Like honestly, wtf?

I wouldn't mind a new powerplay coach, a timely goal could really help this team. We got one but still 30th in the league is not good enough. Would Bennett look out of place in the AHL? Honest question. Watching games like this and the one against the Ducks earlier We need more possession players that can win board battles so we dont get cycled to death. I really hope we dont end up in that 9 spot. Playoffs or bust.
