You want to put a guy who can't crack the Avs terrible blue line in the top four of one of the best d corps in the league?
Why? I hope it's not because he was a first round pick. Six years ago.

I hope we do.
I'm assuming that we move 1 or 2 defencemen before the deadline, so there will be a spot for him anyways. The potential is still there, and it's no huge loss if we don't.
Young d-men don't come along every day for free. I hope we make a push. As much as Anderson, Nakladal, Kulak or Hickey could fill that spot after a trade they certainly haven't been playing top-end hockey for a long enough sustained period for us to really have the Flames hand forced quite yet.
Give it a shot, and see what the rewards are for your no-risk move.
Remember Schlemko?

I don't see the fit we already have 7 Dmen on the roster which includes 6/7 making a combined $6.4M. Unless we are trading Russell or Wideman in a separate trade this makes no sense. Treliving would be familiar with this player though

Coaching is a wonderful thing. While I don't think he should be immediately planted in the top-4, if they pick him up it is with that potential in mind. Not reaching it would be a disappointment.
The Avs haven't really been known for stellar defensive coaching. I would gather that the idea behind picking him up is that we are a team that can provide him the support to reach that top-4 potential.

Because the Russell contract expires at the end of the season and it's about building a team for the future. Possibly trade Wideman in the offseason.
Can get by this season without Russell and next season Nakladal and Gormley would be a nice injection of youth IMO.

Yeah, but only if this allows Flames to move Russell and get max value.
Gormley could then replace Nakladal or Kulak in Stockton (one of whom would fill Russell's spot). Wait, could Flames assign him to the AHL?
Then he can try to crack the Flames next camp.

There seems to be a lot of Avs fan outrage that Roy is choosing to play inferior D-men over giving others a chance because he's "their guy".
I mean fans will be fans, but it's not hard to buy that a coach sometimes gets myopia on a player he likes.

He would have to be put on waivers again by the Flames in order to be assigned to Stockton.

The Flames should pull the trigger and trade Baertschi for Gormley.
They need to do this before the Jets offer them Petan for Gormley.

If the Flames had a destination for, say, Smid then I'd give Gormley a shot. But from all accounts this guy has been a big disappointment, so I wouldn't expect him to be more than a 6/7.

Great:
Brodie
Giordano
Hamilton
Good:
Engelland
Replaceable:
Wideman
Smid
Likely Traded:
Russell
The way I see it, we have 4 D-men and 3 of them top-4; and 4 good prospects that we can honestly talk about having NHL potential. That leaves 3 spots to upgrade upon, and 1 of them being a top-4.
The more options we can gather without ruining development, the better. Gormley would be a part of that development, not a barrier to it.
I wouldn't be too terribly upset to see Wideman in the pressbox if Gormley proves his spot. If he doesn't, he sees the pressbox himself or says hello to waivers again.

wow.
i hated that jokinen trade after seeing what he actually brought to the table (or lack thereof, in that he wasn't the #1 center that sutter intended the trade to result in). Especially at the 1st round pick given up in exchange.
Today, i feel a lot better. Still i thought gormley was developing slowly but surely over the past few years. Didn't realize he would turn to waiver fodder.
still, i wouldn't have minded the flames picking him up given that he was touted as a 2-way/PP qb type dman. However, given that a team so in need for such dmen in the avs couldn't make room for him on their roster is quite telling.

This is almost every fan's complaint, though. And I tend to think that if virtually every NHL coach is making these sorts of decisions that frustrate fans, then there is probably a pretty good reason to think that they are the right ones regardless of the optics.
Gormley has played 26 games in Colorado this season, and doesn't have a lot to show for it. I find it difficult to believe that Roy is operating under an obvious, damaging bias in this instance.

I doubt he makes it to us anyway. He's going to be a blue jacket. Have you seen their back end even with Jones on it? Gormley can slot in on their bottom pairing/7th spot very easily. They've got guys like Connauton, Prout, Goloubef and Falk kicking around.

Kylington won't be sitting in the minors that long. He's being fast tracked by being in the AHL at 18. I see him getting some NHL games as early as next year.
