RIDICULOUS thinking. Just because a player was taken in the first round does not make them a bust if they haven't made the NHL in the their first couple years of pro or have some adaptation period to pro.

Some of the comments in this thread are face palm worthy.
Everyone should remember that both of these players were drafted after Jankowski and are playing in a better league. I think most people are curious to see how Jankowski does in the AHL next season before they feel comfortable with judging where he's at development wise. For Poirier and Klimchuk, that would be two seasons from now.

No two players are carbon copies of each other and will develop at their own pace. Brodie and Johnny both 4th rounders, and have rounded into stars through different paths. Johnny jumped right into pro without skipping a beat but Brodie needed a few seasons in minor pro. It's just the way things go.

Tyler Johnson undrafted and led the NHL in playoff scoring.

Each prospect develops uniquely, and comparing them alot of times is folly.

This is similar to the Dougie Hamilton situation, but up front. I wouldn't object to moving the 2017 1st cause the team is trending upwards with the development of our core players so the pick isn't as likely to be in the lottery ranks. Compliment our core with another young skilled player that already has a head start with NHL experience under his belt.

Then acquire a RW vet with size at the deadline or in FA.
Hamilton was arguably the best D on his team at the time of his trade. At the very least he was viewed as the heir apparent to Chara.

Drouin hasn't done much of anything in the NHL, and his coaches don't like the way he plays without the puck. If he can't play for John Cooper and Steve Yzerman, he can't play for Bob Hartley, and Brad Treliving.

I'm so glad CP doesn't make trades/roster moves/draft selections for the Flames.

Have you seen some of the great moves that CP has made in the last few years? Suter, Parise, Johanson, Niederreider, Rattie, Stamkos, Price, Lucic just to name a few. And most of these players were hypothetically acquired for small parts!

If CP made trades/roster moves/draft selections the Flames would be the best team in the league by far. Dynasty.

Has anyone made the Cammalleri for Drouin joke yet?

It seems strange to me that young talents like Drouin (and possibly Stamkos if the rumours are true) would want to leave Tampa. Could someone give me the Coles Notes version of why this may be?

Drouin's #'s are actually not bad at all give ice-time and lack of PP time. He is far from a bust.

I feel like this needs repeating.

Drouin's not having a problem breaking into the NHL. He's having a problem breaking into probably the deepest forward corps in the league as a 20 year old.

Was there any inkling of this before the agent let it out? I'm surprised it managed to stay so quiet for so long if he asked for a trade in November.

It's like this with every fanbase though. I pick through the Trade Rumors & Speculation forum on HF and it's always (good asset) for (spare parts), or (underpayment) for (overpayment). Rarely do we ever see a trade that both fanbases nod thoughtfully at.

I actually understand where Jonathan Drouin is coming from and don't think he is out of line.

The NHL has changed. If you look at the figures, forwards peak at 24-25 and usually go through a fairly sharp decline at 27. This idea that every young player has to learn a solid two way game and pay his dues in the minors simply doesn't jive with reality anymore.

If you're a top talent and your playing in a system with an old school development program, it can be disastrous to your career. Your window in the new NHL is tiny.

Drouin paid his dues when he destroyed the Q, and when given opportunities in the NHL he's shown he can score there too. Him being sent down everytime he has a 4 game dry spell is absurd. Particularly when he's been given minimal ice time. You can call Drouin "whiny" or selfish, but the simple fact of the matter is that professional sports is a cut throat business. If you don't act selfishly, you won't get the opportunities you otherwise would.

Drouin will be turning 21 shortly. He should be getting the prime ice time, as he is entering his peak production years. If he waits until he's 23 or 24 then he's left with a very short time to actually play in the NHL at a peak level. If Tampa can't provide him with that opportunity, it's time to get out.

Is Detroit considered the exception to this new NHL development path?
Tartar and Nyquist are always used as their prime examples. Granted neither of them went 3rd overall

Detroit had been great for the team, but not for young players. They haven't had a young player show as much as Drouin since, well, Larkin...

But even Detroit can admit when a young player shows enough talent to make the NHL roster.

Sure, but we're talking about a change in the recent NHL right? So Detroit is adapting to this change.

I also don't know that they've had a prospect that they had held back even when they were ready until Larkin came along. From what I've gathered, he's the first to really force his way on and others weren't quite as clear-cut NHLers

That was my point. You have to think Tatar and Nyquist left money on the table by not getting their second contacts until late. Better for the team, whose got the individual

But in reality, what was the last "Drouin" type prospect Detroit has had?
