EW went on to point out that there is a lot of speculation that Snoke might end up being Darth Plagueis, who was mentioned in the prequel films, but Serkis confirms that he...
“turns out to be… just Snoke.”
Serkis says that he was aware of the events in the previous films and says that his character is a new addition to the saga. Serkis goes on to explain his character:
“Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful. Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.”
More will be revealed regarding this character as the story arc for the new trilogy continues to play out. I’m very curious to know Snoke’s story. I’m sure whatever it is, it will surprise us all, unless the information leaks out early!
I can't wait for the next one. I can sense an internal dilemma between plot brevity and movie length. There were a lot of things left out and I would have been fine watching a 3 hour movie if it was good, but being Disney they probably were mandated to keep it to a maximum length. Hopefully they release extended editions that are considered canon because that would be cool. Another half an hour of story felt missing from the movie imo; more at the beginnging, more with Mas, more with Leia, more with the starkiller (they came up with a plan to defeat the largest weapon ever in less than 30 seconds).
The starkiller part was the weakest of the movie, it was dispatched of with so quickly and had no real sense of foreboding despite the fact that it destroyed multiple planets. Atleast with Han there was some sense of loss, with the Starkiller it was a big meh.
Between Serkis inteviews and Kasdan's response to the question about Darth Plagueis I don't doubt that Snoke is a fresh character.
The back story is that he was probably around during the Clone Wars as an unseen character and maybe became a family friend of the Solo's and corrupted Ben from in close before defecting to the First Order.
There are several rumors of Hayden playing Anakin in flashbacks in the next movie, maybe Snoke turns out to be a Jedi Knight that worked with him.
But recycling a villain that was mentioned for 6 seconds in the ROTS doesn't make a lot of sense and the casual fans won't care.

Cuz we had seen it all before.

Just to poke fun at how similar Star Wars TFA was to new hope, I created some speculation of the next movie. I've put it in spoiler tags for those that don't want to read it
Spoiler!
Star Wars, The First Order Lashes Out
Opening Crawl
It is the dawn of a new day With the destruction of Star Killer Base and the retreat of the First Order, the Resistance has decided on some RnR and moved their base of operations to the beach and ocean world of Hermoine.
While the Resistance recharges their batteries, the Sinister First Order has dispatched geological survey droids to try to find the Resistance Base which could spell the end of the hopes of freedom and goodness in the galaxy.
Meanwhile Rey has disapeared and the evil Kylo Ren finihes his training with Supreme Commander Snoke.
Our opening scene sees a First Order Star Destroyer literally crapping out thousands of ball shaped droids. One of them streaks through the atmosphere and crashes on a beach on the planet Hermoine.
We zoom in and see a figure in a speedo riding a purpoise, Its Finn, he see's a splash and picks up his com link.
"Hey Poe old buddy, I've set the last of the water markers and I'm heading back, but I saw something crash and I'm going to check it out"
Poe responds back.
Ok for brevities sake I'm just going to summerize things
Poe responds back with a smart alecky comment.
Meanwhile we zoom to the hidden fortress of evil and see Snoke and Ren, Ren is wearing his mask which means that he's now a complete bad ass
Snoke - "The time has come Lord Ren, your training in Evviiil is complete. And I Supreme Commander Snoke who used to be Palpatines man servant am now your master"
evil music starts to play as Ren raises from his kneel and gets his instructions to go crush the rebe . . . resistance.
We head back to Hermoine just to see Finn get attacked by a giant Whale Ape combination, he's knocked unconscious.
We zoom out to space and see Rey in a 10 minute training montage with Luke, the most awkward scene is Rey carrying Luke around on her shoulders while receiving wisdom.
We head back to Hermoine in time to see Finn beating up the whale man, and running out of the cove that he was in. Poe finds him and cuts open an octopus and jams fin in it to keep him from shriveling up due to water exposure.
We zoom out to a first order star destroyer and we see officers clustered around pictures from the probe droid of beach umbrellas. Kylo Ren identifies it as a hidden rebel base and General Hux comments that it could be vacationers, but Ren is convinced that its the Resistance and chokes Hux to death and appoints Admiral Comp Eval as the new Commander.
We zoom back to the world where rey is training, Luke forces her to go into a dark well where she encounters Ren and cuts his head off the mask explodes and Ren see's her face. Luke asks her if her mind is like totally blown.
Meanwhile on Hermoine the First Order attacks debuting their new walkers with 5 legs instead of 4 because 5 > 4 plus they're bigger like 12 x bigger.
Poe and Finn take off in speeders and soon learn that their blasters aren't strong enough. So they decide to bring them down with a super weapon called a knee capper that's basically a cable strung between the speeders that take their legs out.
After a losing battle Poe, C3P0 Chewie Finn, and BB-8 escape on Fins ship the Centurian Eagle, since Rey has the Falcon.
They are pursued by Ren and the First Order Star Destroyer and fly into a nebula. Ren states angrily that Nebula's do not concern him, he wants that ship.
Meanwhile Rey has visions of her friends in trouble and decides to leave her training to go and save them. A Ghost of Palpatine pops up and says its a bad idea, then realizes that it will be easier for her to fall to the dark side tells her to "Go for it Girl" Luke disprove and states that she's could possibly be their last hope. Anakin Skywalkers ghost pops up and says, yeah there can't be any more out there can there, I mean that would be completely implausible.
Meanwhile Poe and Finn and part realize their hyperdrive has broken along with everything else and crash on the Casino World of New Las Hutta.
There they meet Lando Calrission the doorman to the establishment. Here we get the big reveal that Lando is Finn's father, Finn asks him how many illegitimate children are there.
At that moment Lando snaps and betrays them to Ren who tortures them.
Rey arrives just as Poe is um frozen in a block of ice and given to Captain Phasma who still smells like garbage and has a rotten banana stuck to her helmet. Finn manages to escape thanks to his dad but can't save Poe who is hauled away in Phasma's star ship the Indentured Servant.
Meanwhile Rey confronts her destiny and fights Ren in a massive sabre duel and they both totally cut lose. At one point they have an etch a sketch battle using just the force. Ren reveals that he and Rey were boyfriend and girlfriend at the Jedi Academy and he went bad when Snoke said that Rey was cheating on him.
Rey screams out that that was impossible and kicks Ren in the junk and flees. She catches a ride on Fins ship the centurian Eagle.
Ren returns to his star destroyer and commands the capture of our hero, but somehow in this mess BB-8 has not only disable the tractor beams but the showers on levels 10 to 20, the new Supreme Admiral Comp Eval is not pleased but Ren doesn't kill him.
Ren reaches out to Snoke and asks what his next move is. Ren is to capture Rey and bring her before Snoke so he can complete her evil training.
the movie ends as Fin wearing Poe's clothing readies the Eagle to take off so he can rescue his buddy.
We go to the Resistance ship where Rey hugs Princess Leia who has a knowing look in her eye.
The end

Sooo...all of them. You could just say that. All of them. All of them were bad.
Jesus, some of those are awful.

I had forgotten how bad most of those special edition changes were. Disney could make a lot of easy money if they paid that harmy guy and released the despecialized versions as the final edition of the original trilogy

I think I've still got the original originals sitting in storage on laser disc.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did just that...
While packaging them into a 9 movie box, so that you'd have to buy the prologue garbage with them.
I keep thinking that if they do a reveal in a movie, where Snoke stands up and says "No, I am Darth Plageuis" that the average film going is going to go huh and its going to fall flatter then a fart in church. The Sidious/Palpatine thing worked because you didn't have to devolve into this deep backstory on the villain.
Can confirm. I had no idea who Plageuis was prior to this thread, as is 90% of the stuff discussed outside of the cinematic universe in this thread. I even had to look up what EU and OT stood for lol.

Adjusted gross list is the way to go. Force Awakens will probably be the second most succesful Star Wars movie after A New Hope. (Which is all time #2 after Gone With the Wind.)
(Also, Avatar isn't that bad. At least the extended version I've seen.)
Adjusted gross doesn't work for a lot of reasons, mainly the difference in entertainment competition.
Internationally, Avatar did 2 billion dollars. I doubt that Star Wars will come any where near that. I wish boxofficemojo tracked weekly box office drops for Avatar but I can only find the domestic numbers.

There's been rumours that they're trying.
From what I've read there's issues with Fox having the distribution rights for the films.
