I don't know that I would trust the Tri State Livestock News as an un-biased source in this dispute.

For one, it completely leaves out the claim that the 2001 fire was started to cover up illegal deer slaughters on Federal land.

I didn't mean to suggest it was a perfect source or a perfect story, only that it contains a ton of really interesting background details about this family and their history, and that I didn't see that kind of detail elsewhere.

Honestly don't see the parallels between this and acts of terrorism. The buildings are empty and there is no intention to hurt anyone here. A far cry from walking into a crowd and setting off a bomb or firing automatic weapons.

This has a lot more in common with sit ins and other forms of protest. Calling this terrorism is a slippery slope towards banning all protest against the government.

I would agree it's not really terrorism, but it's also not protest. It's armed seizure of federal land. I would just call it treason.

The gun-loving group insisted it won’t bring any violence to the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Burns, but seemed prepared for it anyway, with de facto leader Ryan Bundy telling an Oregonian reporter they are "willing to kill and be killed if necessary.”

The definition of terrorism is "the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims."

They're willing to use violence, obviously by the "kill or be killed" statement, and being armed to the teeth is certainly a method of intimidation, and they're clearly seeking some kind of political gain with this move.

Again, if this was a group of Muslims demonstrating in protest of anti-Muslim discrimination, or a group of Black Lives Matter activists protesting inhumane police practices (both of which are far more blatantly obvious in today's America than whatever these nutbars are "protesting"), there would be a huge reaction from law enforcement.

But they're just a bunch of dumb rednecks with guns, so clearly, not actually a threat.
