What will Monahan's next contract be?
With all of the buzz surrounding Gaudreau, one key part of the Flames' future is being forgotten, somewhat - 2013 6th overall pick Sean Monahan.
He'll be due for a huge raise this summer. What does he get?

I really think he may get a bridge, but I will say 6.5M.

I think he gets a bridge as well. Because at this point, we really don't know what his ceiling is and what kind of player he will become. I think both sides would be happy with a 2-year deal and wait and see how good of a player he can become.

8x$6.5m. We may not know his ceiling, but he's a #1 centre.

Can't see it at this point, personally
I would give him 8 x $5 - 5.5M, but I doubt he goes long term for that money - which is why I think it's a bridge

I think a 3 year 5.5 mill deal might be best.
I don't think he's earned a long term deal IMO.
Johnny though gets 8/7.5 per

My preferences would be:
A) 2Y/4.5M
B) 8Y/6.25M
Either of those is fine by me.

I'm on the fence with Monahan. Once he gets better at face-offs he will be a solid overall center but he's not a great skater and I feel he may be better suited as a 2nd line center. I just don't see that extra gear in his game that say Gadreau has and I don't see the offensive creativity in his game you want in a top line center.

He scored 62 points at age 20, not sure how you don't think he'll be a first-liner.

I think he's a first liner on this team but I don't know if he's ideally a first line center on a Cup contender. 62 points is great and all but he's not going to reach that this season and his ceiling may be of a 50-65 point guy rather than a 65-80 point center which is what you ideally hope for in a first line center. To me he seems like a passenger on the Gadreau line.

The question for me is he a great complimentary player or can he be a true 1st liner in his own right? No one can take last year away from him but I'm thinking he rode the Gaudreau train pretty hard.
Not taking anything away from him, he's one of my favorite players. I'm just trying to be realistic about him.

^^ Guys, he's 21, for Pete's sake. Let's give him until he's, say, 24 or 25 until we start making wild guesses about his ceiling.

Let's what until it's conclusive what he is before we discuss what he might become?

I'm pretty sure any contract you're giving a 21 year old is an educated guess about his ceiling.

You're saying that you'll know for sure what Monahan is when he's 24?
I mean, Patrick Kane's 27, and his amazing season this year is blowing me out of the water.

I'd say a bridge deal can go into the confidence of said ceiling. Nonetheless, he's probably looking at high 4's to high 5's for a bridge deal and probably high 6's plus if you're doing a long term deal.

95% sure.
It's not like Kane wasn't amazing before this year. He's been considered a top 10 player for a few years now even if this year happens to be his career season. Last year he probably would've won the Art Ross if he stayed healthy.
