Yea, not defending that guy.
Riling up opposing fans is one thing, some of the stuff in here is funny, but there are several that are stepping over the line. I understand the butthurt is strong, but going full sh1tposting and raging over ethnical prejudices is way, way past ok.

I've rarely seen such deserved blame. Virtanens penalties very likely cost them at least one goal for and one goal against.
Then again Virtanen is just a kid who tried and failed. The real blame is on the coaches. They're the guys that should know better.

Nothing I saw from that team suggested to me they were going anywhere in this tournament anyway.
That's the teenager's hometown media splashing that by-line on the back cover. Pretty rough.

2) goaltending. It was never good in this tournament. But again, it was at a new level of bad today. It was plain for all to see that Blackwood was fighting the puck and handing out rebounds like Easter eggs. Lowry pulled him 25 minutes too late.
3) selfish play. Marner, Virtanen, Strome and occasionally Point, were continually trying to do it all by themselves. The best players simply weren't good enough. Yes, Marner had a couple goals today, but too little too late. And he followed it up with a stupid, selfish penalty.
4) coaching. So many examples. But I'll just go with the fact that he stuck with his guys (Virtanen, Hicketts, Blackwood, Marner, Strome) no matter what they did. Strome and Marner were good at times, but the bottom line is that these guys got the ice-time and they didn't deliver.
5) team structure. Hockey Canada used to try and fill roles. Now they have gone completely the other way and just tried to pick talent. And as a result, they had no leadership, no physicality, no grinders. I agree that you need talent, but a team also needs balance. And this team was too small, and lived on the perimeter.
6) Jake Virtanen. His level of stupidity was so high that he deserves his own bullet

I agree with most of your points, but I thought Marner was clearly the best player on the ice for Canada today (when it counted), especially in the third period. Every time he was on Canada had a chance to score, he completely carried the team offensively. Strome to me was the disappointment, a guy they had brought in for his offense could not even complete a pass, the puck was a bomb on his stick. Virtanen was just crap all tournament and took too many selfish penalties. Extremely frustrating loss, but I thought they would lose just looking at their roster from the start, not enough talent on their top lines. This tournament finish will likely rank up with the 1998 team.

I'm looking forward to seeing Finland repeat. They have some great young talent on that team.

Marner had a good 3rd period. One good period and a few good shifts, and that was pretty much it for the tournament.
And then he rained on that with the stupid penalty.
Marner and Strome were among the top prospects in the tournament. Yet they were totally outplayed by several kids that are still draft eligible.
I am not saying the whole tournament is on their backs, but they weren't as good as I thought they should be. That is all.

Is it the coach's fault when you're on the PP and the ref is calling the other team for another penalty, which would give you a 5 on 3 in a one-goal game, and one of your players hooks a guy when the play is going to be blown down the moment the kid touches the puck anyway?
The coaches deserve a lot of blame. But that is 100% on the kid. Possibly the single most unaware, idiotic play I have ever seen at this level of hockey.

Mine too! U-18 is a close second, although there are two of them, so that kind of diminishes them. Macs MM is right up there. I wonder why there isn't a U-19 or a U-21 tournament? I could see U-21 becoming my new favorite...
