He and Mitchell Stephens were grossly misused IMO.

Ollas Mattsson out for 4-6 weeks
A blow for Sweden too. Was really liking his play in the tournament...

I know everyone wants to pile on Virtanen, and the one he took to negate a 5 on 3 was terrible judgment, but the two penalties they called on him in the third were not penalties. Same with the Marner penalty. The refereeing was not good. The goaltending wasn't either. The puck luck was terrible - a puck over the glass at the far end? Yikes. The coaching has been mentioned.
A lot of things went wrong there. It's not on one guy. And the team looked fantastic in the first period. In the third, where'd the forecheck go?

The goaltending would have been fine if the goalie sitting on the bench wasn't a flames prospect.
3rd goal was weak, 1st was a combo of weak and bad dman screening. The rest were terrible defence plays or unlucky in hickeys case.

How can you say those weren't penalties? Marner punched a guy? Could they let it go? Maybe but don't give them that choice

It isnt just that. The players play but in my opinion its the coach's responsibility to set them up to succeed.
Blackwood was struggling, his coach hung him out to dry.
Virtanen was taking a ton of bad penalties all tournament, his coach kept throwing him out there to the detriment of the team.
Kicketts got unreal playing time making poor decisions, taking bad penalties and the occasional good play but kept getting tons and tons of minutes.
Look at the players who really carried the mail! I liked Stephens, Barzal and Konecky up front along with Crouse.
On the back end Hickey spent most of his time killing Hicketts/Virtanen's various stupid penalties. I liked McKoewn, Dermott, IMO was one of the best Dmen on the team and he got almost no time.

Better yet, it was reportedly (this could be totally made up and no one said this because all I've seen is random internet talk) Julius Nattinen - who plays with Blackwood on the Colts.
Which if true would be pretty absurd.

Marner's should have been let go - they weren't calling those both ways. Virtanen's slashing call? A five year hold has a firmer grip on his stick. "Don't give them a chance" is problematic, because for my money that attitude caused Canada to play more tenatively than they need to to have a chance here. This wasn't a particularly strong roster in comparison to other years; they needed a high energy game, and when they played it in the first ten minutes it was obvious who the better team was. Unfortunately, a completely legitimate style of play exposes you to poor officiating - it's never good in this tourney and it certainly wasn't today. It's basically begging for embellishment.

Yes they were.
On the first one,. he had his stick between the player's legs, but with no real intent, and the ref let it go. But then he persisted and got his stick between the guys legs again and the ref had no choice. A penalty every time.
The second call (the slash) was just too blatant to ignore. He lifted his stick pretty high and came straight down on the other player's stick. Again, that's going to get called in international play every time.
Marner and the defenseman were pushing each other - no problem. Then Marner punched him in the face. Gave the ref something to call.
Sure, the game is not all on one guy. But Virtanen gave as good of an effort as you'll ever see for trying to put it all on one guy

it all depends if William Nylander is back to that game. With him, Sweden can match Finlands high-skill offense. Without him, we're toast.
William Nylander is so good that Torontos GM is apparently flying to Finland to check out personally how he is doing.

That, and Sweden is traditionally seen as the USA of Scandinavia. Self entitled, big egos, think they are the greatest.

I think you confused Sweden with Canada. Funny seeing the Canadian players go out in media and crying at the refs today. Enjoy your quarterfinal exit!
