True, I guess I have a soft spot for him after is game 6 clincher last year. Regardless, I can't see Treliving plugging more money into our bottom 6, doesn't make sense.

Totally agree. Spend the money on top 6. When you start paying pluggers (4.43 goal scorers) $3+ million is when serious cap issues arise.

The team could use some fresh legs too, gives room for a young guy like Hathaway to come up and inject some energy. We seem to be missing that jump we had last year.

Any time you're paying 4th liners north of 2 million dollars, you're doing something wrong. Stajan, while being a good leader for this team is making too much for the role he provides. You could replace him with Bill Arnold making the league minimum and would not severely impact the team overall.

Agreed. Team needs to start having a good look at what some of the.young guys can do with more minutes. You can cycle through Raymond, Bollig, and Jooris all you want. The result stays the same. Keeping Granlund on the roster for the rest of year Would be a good decision also.

If you swapped out Jones/Stajan/Bollig/Raymond out for Shore/Poirier/Agostino/Arnold tomorrow, would there be any any real difference in the level of play? Only difference being a near 10 million dollar savings in what they're paid. That alone would account for the increase in pay for Gaudreau and Monahan.

I know hindsight is 20/20, but looking back how awesome and beneficial to the franchise would it have been to sell high on Wideman, Russell and Hudler this off season? We would have got so much more for Hudler than we'll get now, and likely would have got something for Wideman instead of not having a willing trade partner.

He might've tried for all we know. In fact rumors suggest he's been heavily shopping Wideman since summer but can't find someone to take him off our hands. A user here, turek_fan_guy or w/e claims Eric Duha told him that they are considering buying him out next summer.
There was also a tweet from Roger Millions at the last deadline that Pens had scouts in to watch Russell, and came away unimpressed. (they traded Despres for Lovejoy that day)

Already been reported that they are have had some talks with Russell about an extension.

Why would you even ball park it? If you end up keeping Wideman and giving Monahan/Gaudreau a combinde $15M, it's a moot point, the Flames would be spending 50% Of the cap on 6 players with no NHL goalie signed, and two overpaid vet forwards already on the roster. That's not a team that's going to look at signing a guy like Jones to the $3M or $4M that will keep him away from free agency.
I see these stories leak and always assume it's the agent trying to tell the team, he wants more than you can afford. Which is too bad for Jones, because we saw what happened to Glencross last season when his agent took that stance. I don't really see a big difference between Jones and Glencross situations.

Stajan has 2 goals in the 2015-2016 season
You are sort of nitpicking at nothing for no reason.

Not surprised, would be shocked to hear they were negotiating a contract.
Hopefully they can get a 3rd for Jones at the deadline but if not I have no problem keeping him for a playoff run and letting him walk after the season.

Because you don't know what he wants unless you ask? You are assuming he wants $3-$4 million, maybe he is willing to take much less to guarantee a contract and not go to UFA after the Glencross fiasco this summer.

Do the swap please!! At least the guys in the "A" would get a chance to better their game in the show! The new guys might be a lot different playing with more skilled players... They sure as hell wouldn't be any worse!

And I don't want to see Jones back, or Russell back no matter how cheap! Hudler? Looks like he's injured 3.0 max for one season at a time... Enough of overpaying older guys who are pretty much toast!

hate to reign on your (bizarre) parade here. but 2 in 37 leaves him with just 55 games to produce even 1 more to contradict the original (tongue in cheek) post. so it is very much in the realm of possibility that he may in fact score no more goals this season. its not likely, but his current 4.43 pace suggest that it is more possible for him than most bottom pairing defensemen.
I like stajan, and disagree with shipping him out based off goals, but your argument is terrible and actually is making you look silly. give it up fella.

These guys have to have some sort of clue that their future isn't with the Flames and it shows, they're all kind of mailing it in. And that's why it will be a busy feb-july 1 for treliving. Lets get this roster to the next level and dump the passengers!
|
Outside of arguably Backlund, you've just listed all the players that CP has a collective hate on for. Some of these guys aren't even up for UFA status. (But I do wish the Raymond contract was never signed...)
The way that CP has turned on Russell is sad. He was stand-up for us last year. His salary hit is 2.6 mill. Trade him? Play Smid? Is that what you want? Do you want more Smid? Cuz that's how you get more Smid.

David Jones was seriously underappreciated last year and especially in the playoffs. Ferland may had the spectacular hits, but Jones played a very physical game as well, and many of his physical plays and hard work resulted in goals (or near goals, watch the plays he makes on Bennett "goal" vs Ana Game 3)
Doesn't mean you don't think of moving him or resigning him, but before we pull an Oiler fan and start crapping on players, give the guy his due credit. Given how soft and undersized and under physical this team is already (last two games are prime examples) losing more of that physicality really can't occur without a similar replacement coming in.

Flames have yet to start contract talks with David Jones
I don't recall David Jones being under-appreciated in the playoffs. Many people were calling the Ferland-Stajan-Jones the best line at the time when our first line wasn't playing up to speed for the first two games.
