I also like to note how much of an improvement they made on the Dual Shock 3 with the 4. If they'd kept the same design I'd probably have stayed away from the PS4 altogether. The previous iterations of Sony's controllers were pretty atrocious in my opinion, and I was surprised that it took them so long to introduce grooved joysticks, concaved triggers, etc.
When I first held the DS4 at a demo unit back in 2013, I knew the decision between the systems would be a harder one, as it's definitely a vast improvement.

You state it's personal preference but then go on to mention that many, many people prefer the design of the xbox controller to the "antiquated" dualshock design? It is a personal preference, so the opinion of "many, many people" preferring the Xbox controller is irrelevant, and also, based on units sold, one can safely assume factually incorrect.
For me? I prefer the PS4 joysticks - deadzone is smaller, offering more precise control. I do still prefer the joystick placement on the Xbox One controller though - so if there were a blend of the two, that'd be perfection.
Sounds like the Elite Controller is a fantastic controller - but I've yet to convince myself to spend that amount of money on a controller (...although it is tempting).

You've plenty of time to convince yourself either way, they're sold out everywhere due to the PG completely underestimating the demand.

That's been his shtick in this thread from the start, don't worry.
"I am totally unbiased and impartial, but Xbox is totally way better!"
The guy asked for opinions on which is better, I gave mine. I don't think I need to preface everything with 'In my opinion...' -- obviously if you are someone who loves Halo and Forza games, loves the Xbox controller, and dreams of watching your TV in the corner of your screen while you game for some reason, Xbox is probably the better option. But if someone asks me "Which one should I get?", I'm going to give the same answer every time based on my experience and my likes.

The analog stick placement is antiquated as it goes back decades. It's not ideal for FPS games like the Xbox controllers. It's something I wish Sony would just bite the bullet, accept, and change. If Sony changed the stick placement I feel they could make a controller as good or superior to the Xbox controller but until that happens the two lower sticks is antiquated. My statement was more to Cube that seems to feel that the Sony system and controller is full stop better. That is all.

Almost forgot about this.

I have the black wireless version of that controller for my PS3. I'm surprised there isn't one for the PS4, though from what I've found by sifting through their Facebook page, there seems to be some hold-up coming from Sony's side.

I didn't call out your opinion as incorrect at all, nor was that my intent. It is your opinion which makes it 100% correct for you. I pointed out that it was "for you"; I am sorry if i have caused offense by being redundant, that was never my intent.
As a gaming community, when people ask for help they are looking for an honest set of suggestions and perhaps answers. Certainly they are not looking for a flame war about platforms.
I think that the PS4 is a great device and Sony has made many right moves throughout the last 30 months or so since announcing the device. I think that the Xbox 1 is a great device too except that Microsoft made some poorly received decisions about the Xbox One, and then Microsoft did a poor job managing their corrections. I would say that if Microsoft had performed in the first 18 months as they have in the last 12, things would be closer, numerically.
But that's the way it goes in business sometimes; no one in Microsoft set out to make mistakes and yet they misjudged the market and fell behind early. I might observe that Microsoft's sales department needs to have a real look at themselves with how they priced/limited the number of consoles available in the last month, when they should have been selling like crazy except certain bundles were sold out all over the place, especially in their own online store. Poor, poor planning.
My greater call here is that, as part of CP and the gaming community within, that we try to help people make informed choices about what platform they choose. Regardless of platform, if we add a new gamer to our ranks that means one potential more user for sale of games, to play with online, and to help keep more, better games getting made. One purchase isn't likely to sway any developers, but a poor purchase will sit gathering dust, either way. If we help people choose the right hardware with good advice, they will get the right fit for them. We are all better off having two (or more) companies and many developers competing for our business; better systems, better prices, better games, and a choice.
All of this, in my opinion, of course.

Just curious, what do you feel the huge improvement is? I feel like they're pretty much exactly the same. The main difference the touchpad obviously, dunno how much that gets used anyway.
I feel like the triggers are a bit cleaner, but really, it feels like the exact same controller to me. Not that I care, cause I liked the previous ones. But it makes me curious on how you think they changed.
I know a few people who have said they prefer the XBOX controllers have said the like it better because they have large hands. I haven't used the XBOX controller much, but I do know they are a bit chunkier, though I didn't feel they were too big. I just didn't like the set up. The sticks not being symmetrical in their layout. Though, I think it's something I'd get used to pretty easy if I preferred the XBOX. Their controller actually reminds me of the Nintendo 64 controller.

The biggest change from the DS3 that I noticed immediately was the size. It seems subtle but they beefed up the contours/grips and widened the controller itself for a more substantial feel in the hand. With that, the gap between the two joysticks was also increased a bit (which was a main gripe for me with the DS3. I prefer the joystick placement on the XB but they're in a better spot now on PS4 than they were previously).
Also, the concaved triggers and new grip on the sticks is way better. The previous controller's "dome" sticks and goofy triggers felt just bizarre in my hand, especially for things like shooters (all...slippy and awkward). It was interesting that they held on to design traits like that for so long. I also like the textured back...and hell, even the light bar and the touchpad are kind of cool.
As mentioned earlier too, the "deadzone" on the DS4's sticks seems smaller than those on the XB1. So, even though I prefer the overall feel of the XB1 controller more, I find that I've been doing a little better for some reason on shooter games especially with the DS4. Feels a little more precise, oddly.

Yup, I could see that. A bunch of small improvements adding up to a significant one.
Interesting you bring up the dome shape of the previous sticks. I never really thought about it much, but yeah, I can remember them getting a little slippery in intense gaming sessions.

One thing I can't abide by for PS4 is how cheap the controllers are in terms of quality. It seems that it only takes weeks for a new one to have strange button issues where a button push is off and feels weird, sometimes even making a squeak.
I've only had my xbox for a week so, we'll see if their controllers follow the same suit.

I'm on my 5th Xbox one controller in about 1.5 years.
They're terrible quality. Thankfully I got one when I bought the console, and bought a second from EB games, with warranty. Every time one craps out, it goes back in the EB games box, and I exchange it, and re-buy the protection.
The last one I had three days, and used once before the trigger completely crapped out.
The problem I keep running into most often, causing me to replace, is joystick drift.

I would assume both controllers are made on the cheap. There's always third party of different qualities if one wants to go that route.
I usually didn't start getting a problem with my controller until year 4 or 5. My second one got used a lot less, so I'd just by one replacement and swap out the first one. I'd always get that problem though where pushing a combination of two buttons (like run and jump for instance) would somehow make the controller/machine think I was pushing a third button and my menu would open in the middle of a jump, or my guy would go into a duck or something. Anyone else every have this happen? Happened to both a PS2 controller and PS3 controller of mine.
All in all though, anteing up once every 4-5 years isn't too bad. My x button often got squishy/sticky too.

I've had 2 PS4 controllers die on me. One had the d-pad stop functioning, and another had the L1 button quit working. Very annoying considering how new they both were. I bought a 3rd controller but didn't think about the in-store warranty on it because I never buy that stuff. If this one craps out too I think I'll have to start going that route

It's weird, because my Xbox 360 controllers lasted 4-5 years.

Have you guys tried not mashing the buttons through the floor? I haven't broken a controller for any console since the SNES days. And that was the result of slamming it down in anger after a MarioKart game.

Ah yes. One of my SNES controllers famously wore a noticeable bite mark after a particularly frustrating string of deaths in Super Mario World. The good old days.

I didn't break a single Nintendo, Playstation or XBOX controller before this generation. On my PS4 I have gone through 2. One was a trigger sticking issue that seemed to be a launch issue and was covered. The next one was the rubber on the toggles disintegrating. That's why I kind of want an elite controller to be released for PS4.
