Amusingly back in the last game of the season before the year he was drafted, the Flames were playing Edmonton and were up 2-0 half way through the game. Then Beesley announced that whomever lost and the Flames clinched a playoff spot. Calgary stopped playing and Edmonton came back to win.
That bumped them up in the standings from 5th worst to 6th worst. Chicago slid down to 5 and won the draft lottery. They got Patrick Kane, Edmonton got Gagner.
Even though the Flames lost the game, they were partially responsible for the Oilers protracted streak of being in the basement, so it was a win after all.

"8 point night" Sam Gagner wasn't much better either. Didn't he like almost double his point total on that one night? I recall he had dreadful stats leading up to that game.
i just can't stop laughing at some posts here. Sam Gagner, proven loser with absolutely nonexistent defensive and physicall skills, carreer -104 in +/-

In Gagner's defence the Oilers would have squandered Kane's talent as well. It is similar to the hypothetical Comrie for Corey Perry & a 1st that "the smartest man alive" Kevin Lowe rejected in the fall of 2003. In theory it sounds like a heck of a deal. In reality if it went through Corey Perry would have had his talent squandered to the point where it reunited him with Robbie Shremp in the AHL.
The first rounder I believe would have been Smid's selection. It is a kind of a tragic comedy for Smid as the only thing he had going for him when he was traded was that at least he wasn't drafted by the Oinkers. He at least had some previous experience with an organization that is NOT a fraud masquerading as a pathetic joke.

It bumped them up from 4th worst to 6th worst, leapfrogging both Washington and Chicago, so even if they had lost the game, they still wouldn't have picked first (assuming the lottery would have played out the same). At best, they would have had Alzner available to them as well, but they probably still would have taken Gagner.
