Christmas is about being with your family. To all you grinches go ahead hate the presents, the obligations, the capitalist propaganda and the religious fervour of the season.

If you have a family that wants you there, that hugs you when they open the door and shows appreciation for you being there you better take advantage of that. There are millions of people in the world that would literally die just to have a family for a little while.

You better be seeing your folks, you better give your uncle a handshake, share a drink with the in laws, tell your siblings you love them or even just a gentle pat on the back. The only thing that matters for these few days is spending time with your family when the season is darkest and when the nights are coldest.

You know it is possible for people to have legitimate reasons for not liking or wanting to be around their family members, right?

Every year I drop off a care package of food at the local McDonalds for the all the workers that are forced to work on Christmas day. If I can't convince the owner to shutdown for that day then making sure that others are thinking of them and that they can have a Christmas dinner too is the next best option.

To be clear i'm not looking for thanks of any kind. I enjoying doing things like this and making the lives of others better.

That's nice of you, but I highly doubt anyone there was forced to work Christmas. In fact, I'd bet almost all of them volunteered.

Um, no offense Dion, but there is a very large contingent of people out there that Christmas is just another day, and they are more than happy to get the stat pay. I was chatting with the guys at the 7-11 near my place on Christmas Day, and they were quite happy to be working and getting stat. Hint, they weren't Christian/Catholic.

They were more po'd about the fact that they had to make excuses to every second customer that the Lottomax machines were turned off.

Frik, one of the best gifts I got this year was the fact I could go into the dealership for 4 hours after everyone opened their gifts, and clean up a bunch of paperwork that had been lingering around for a month without any interruptions. I love my family and all, but I don't need a specific day to show it.

To some people, it's just another day.

If there's one thing I like, it's time and a half.

If there's one thing I don't, it's homemade food from strangers. There is about a 0% chance I'd eat food dropped off by some rando. Sweet gesture but no way.

At about 5:00pm on Christmas Day we drove across Lethbridge from one family Christmas to the other one. At first I noticed all the cars getting gas at Shell/ Macs, then across the street I was surprised that there were 5 cars in the McDonalds drive thru.

Re: "...can't convince the owner to shutdown"

In the mid-nineties ,I drove For Calgary Handibus. I worked seven xmas days during my employment with them. A very memorable moment of my employment was a family chastising me (not a joke! they put a complaint on my file) for working Christmas day.

At the time they were chastising me, I was unloading their grandma and her wheelchair. Grandma did apologize for their comments... but it was still a bizarre situation.

people are strange...

Even if you're an atheist like me, there value in a day that everyone gets off. A holiday. A day you can spend with the family and nobody has to go anywhere and do anything. A day - crazy as it sounds - when maybe we don't have to buy anything.

You realize that even in secular European countries they have stat holidays, right? And the countries completely shut down on those days.
