Speaking of Kessel. I feel when they traded him it was to make room to offer Stamkos a deal that will make him the highest paid player in the NHL. They opened the vault for Babcock and I believe they intend to do it for Stamkos. As a Leaf hater this is best case scenario as he's not close to being the best player in the NHL and he's not going to be able to carry a franchise by himself and the contract will cripple them in the future.

I understand that but if there are millions of dollars in endorsements waiting for elite players in Toronto, it should mean that Kessel should be earning more than $250k per year IMO.
In general hockey players don't make a lot out of endorsements relative to their NHL salaries.
Again Stamkos is likely to get more endorsement money than he is now playing in Toronto, but is he going to get Crosby or Ovechkin endorsement money? I doubt it. Granted he is a local boy and a superstar in the league. Again it is debatable.
Are the Leafs going to have all the endorsement deals attached to his NHL contract? Or will Stamkos not know how much endorsement money he is getting until he signs with the Leafs?

I like Weber but man that contract. $7.8 million cap hit until 2025/26.

I think making any kind of decent money of endorsements in Toronto only really works for the Raptors and Blue Jays because they are effectively the national teams of Canada in their sport. The Leafs are not even more popular than the Canadiens at this point and are quite hated across the country. And Stamkos just isn't Ovechkin in terms of personality or Crosby in terms of his legend in Canada. I really doubt he makes significantly more in endorsements if he comes to Toronto.

I'm actually quite surprised t not see Stamkos on this list, since it seems like he is hocking everything these days.

The worse by far is Mike Richards. He's on the Kings' cap until 2031 and he'll never play for them again. To make it far worse, they had a cap free hit buyout for him a year ago and did not take it. Horrific mistake by Lombardi.

I don't think they ever even thought of Stamkos when they traded Kessel. they wanted him out badly. End of story.
As a Leaf hater you should be more concerned about the great prospects they are developing. Two of the NHL's top 10 prospects will join them with or without Stamkos in October. And they'll add another top pick this June.
I'm not seeing how a Stamkos contract will "Cripple" them. I think that Kopitar contract will help cripple the Kings though.

Not at all concerned about their prospects. I don't see anything better than Hamilton, Gadreau, Monahan, and Bennett on their roster or prospect base. The Stamkos contract will be larger than the Kopitar contract and it doesn't take long to hit the cap ceiling as the Flames only a few years back had to sign players just to hit the floor and now they have to make moves with the cap in mind.

Two small, soft guys that have very similar styles.
Hardly what I would call a strategy for building a winner at this point. The Leafs are a long, long way away.

Since when did Nylander become a better prospect than say Bennett or Draisaitl? I'm still lukewarm on him because I don't see him becoming anything more than what his father was. Marner looks good though but so did Druin and he's struggled in the NHL. Flames are fortunate that guys like Monahan and Gaudreau hit the NHL in stride and even Bennett has done pretty well given the Flames lack secondary scoring talent. Some of these guys just don't translate so prospects are just that and guarantee nothing.

Since he became a Leaf.
I am not a Nylander fan (I watch the Marlies a fair bit), but arguing with BigTuna about that would be pointless.
Better to just let him believe they are both top 10 prospects.

Who was the Swede that came over with Salming - Inge Hammerstrom? The guy that Don Cherry described as being able to go into a corner with two eggs in his pockets and come out with neither of them broken.
That will be Nylander, after the shiny-new-toy syndrome fades away. A few face-rubs from NHL defensemen and Nylander will wilt. Then he will be as popular as Kessel. And it will be glorious.

Isn't Nylander destroying the ahl as an 18 year old in a way no one has before? I don't care for the leafs but I thought I read that somewhere.

Well, for one, he's 19.
And he has 34 points in 27 games. Hardly 'destroying the AHL in a way no one has before'.
But... Leafs.

34 points in 27 games in the AHL is incredible for anyone, much less a 19 year old. I hate the Leafs as much as anyone but stats like that can't just be brushed aside.
Whether or not it translates to the NHL is another story but I have a feeling he will be a 2nd liner at the very least.

If Nylander was a top pick of any other team would anyone have any doubts? He's produced at every level. A true blue chipper and a top 10 NHL prospect.

Nylander isn't that small at all. And having a Flames fan arguing about Marner being too small is quite ironic given what a stud 5'9, 157 pound Johnny Goudreau has become. Marner is bigger than Goudreau. But who cares about size? It's about skill. A star on your own fav. team is destroying your argument.
Mitch Marner: 5'11, 159 LBS
Johnny Goudreau-5'9, 157 LBS. (And Johnny is 4 years older).

So you're downplaying the stat of 34 points in 27 games and trying to say he's being overhyped because he's a Leaf, right?
34 points currently leads the entire AHL in scoring by 6 points.
http://http://theahl.com/stats/statdisplay.php
The fact he is 19 makes it even more impressive.

Current top 10 NHL prospects:
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospect-rankings/
Marner #7, Nylander #8.
It's pointless arguing with me because you're being owned.
