Looks like the teen already has plenty of criminal history:
Court records show the teen, who can't be named, is also facing charges from earlier this year that include robbery and weapons offences. On Nov. 20, he was released from custody with conditions that included he live with his grandmother.

You and Rathji should both be proud of what you do - it's very noble.
I know this isn't the AMA you talked about but I'm curious if you guys have your own kids and if so how you dealt with that. Having troubled kids coming into your home is one thing but the fear of one of them hurting my children would be overwhelming.

I shared custody of my daughter pretty well 50% during most of the last 15 years, she grew up with my foster kids, one of whom she considers a brother (the lad at UBC), on the whole my foster kids loved that they were in a 'real family', they were hugely protective of her, I can remember when she was 14 or so some boy at her school started hassling her, my foster son at the time, a native kid out of the depths of the downtown east side with a couple of his friends (who have since passed away) stole a car, drove out to the school (in the burbs where my ex lived) and let the lad know what would happen if he didn't back the eff off, not with my knowledge or approval I hasten to add, I found out a few days later, told him off as much as I could, then we all went out to the keg for steak dinner!!
Needless to say no one hassled my daughter ever again, she became the girl with the murderous native backup that will track you down and break your legs if you try anything on.
I think it worked well because it was only half the time, the boys would be on their best behaviour while she was around, especially when she was younger, but then save up any 'issues' for when she was with my ex.

I should also point out I've been a youth worker pretty well all my life, worked in group homes youth jails, drug and alcohol facilities etc, so I have a pretty good sense of who was suitable for my home and who wasn't, I also wouldn't leave my daughter alone with my foster kids as you would with older brothers when she was with me, not that I would think they would hurt her on purpose but they weren't the best at understanding consequences.
My mum ran a woman's shelter as I was growing up which undoubtedly influenced my career choices, my daughter now works for service Canada at a help desk and is working towards a social work degree (which I worry about as social worker is a crappy job these days) but I love that she wants to help people and it has balanced out my ex's influence who incredibly materialistic.
On the whole being around foster kids has made my daughter a better person, she certainly views it that way and I'd agree

It's the stupid judges in this country that's pissing me off, people are getting probation for possession of illegal handguns. If this keeps up we'll have the same problems as the states.
My take:
(first offense)
Possession of an illegal gun - 5 years
Using an illegal gun in a crime - 10 years
Shooting someone with an illegal gun - 25 years
Post these penalties on billboards/front pages and watch violent crime drop.

There needs to be some leeway on this, a person may not even know a gun is illegal or may be holding it for a friend. While that is still stupid it's not minimum 5 years stupid if they had no intention of hurting anyone.

Not sure why you need to specify the gun as being illegal. Using any gun in the commision of a crime should be the same penalty. There would probably also be a separate charge however for having the illegal gun.

I have 2 of my own. My foster kids are both older and younger than my bio kids.
You do need to be vigilant about some things, so it isn't without its concerns, but it is more or less the same as with my bio kids. You have to watch them or they are going to cause problems!

I don't understand how anyone that's going to trial for a violent crime who has a prior criminal background is being released until trial. That's what grinds my bones.
And the fact that they put him with his grandmother, and he clearly broke those release conditions with or without his Grandmother knowledge bugs me as well.
To me, I firmly believe that if you release someone into the custody of a family member or friend or whatever, and they go out and commit a crime, the person responsible for the release conditions should be charged with aiding and abetting, or whatever its called.

By illegal I mean handguns and assault rifles, If somehow a friend of yours owns these legally it's still against the law for he/she to give them to you for storage and for you to take them. Sorry, that excuse shouldn't work anymore.

Sure, that's fine.
Again, I'm more thinking about type of weapons coming into our country by criminals, as of now there is little deterrent, a guy got caught a couple of years ago in Brampton Ont with fully automatic ak-47, he was known to police for gang relations but no criminal record. He told the judge it was just a fun hobby and got probation.
It has to stop.

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but apparently the same suspects allegedly did a home invasion and beat a woman. The car they stole was apparently the same one used in the crimes.

I believe in rehabilitation, but I also believe in punishment.
I think optimally a mix of both is required.
I also believe that the degree of that mix should be variable as deemed necessary. These three committed a heinous crime and should be treated as such.

I believe in rehabilitation, but I also believe that prison should be a place that you never want to go to twice.
I'm not saying that there should be institutionalized beatings and rapes and stuff like that.
But I firmly believe that rock crushing hard labor sentences should come back.
I believe that if your in prison, when you're not in a classroom or job training course, that you should either be crushing rocks or doing some other unpleasant activity.
Rehabilitation has to go hand in hand with deterrence.
