It's no Spengler Cup, though.

What's the debate exactly? That Canada is the only country that cares about the tournament? That's true but so what? That it's overhyped in this country? That's true but so what? There's no debate as we all watch it this time of the year. Some to cheer on Canada to the gold and some just to watch the world's top junior players in a showcase tournament. What you take out of it is entirely up to you but there's no debate. It is what it is which is an amateur junior hockey tournament.

I can't remember if I've ever cheered for a Flames prospects team over team Canada before. I think if the prospect was a blue chipper I might but other than that I don't think I would. Seems weird to cheer for say Ollas Mattsson over team Canada even if we had no prospect playing for team Canada. To each their own though.

The last few years I've cheered for both, yes BOTH Flames prospects and Canada. It really isn't a hard thing to do. Hope Canada and [insert Prospect here] don't meet too early on. Cheer for both until they do meet. Cheer for Canada to win and [insert prospect here] to have an enormously awesome game. Somehow this becomes complicated and unpatriotic...

It's easy to cheer for both but the conundrum comes when the game matters say a medal or elimination game. If we had Auston Matthews and it was USA vs Canada in the finals I'm not sure how I'd feel. My Flames allegiance might outweigh my Canada allegiance in this situation. Someone like Kylington though I don't think so.

I would want to see Canada win 6-5 and Matthews get all 5 goals for the US.

In 2013, I was cheering for Canada, but I wasn't really upset when Johnny scored 2 goals and 1 assist in the semifinal against Canada.

It's funny now to hear them call him "John". The legend of Johnny Hockey hadn't made it to TSN yet.

Haha, Ray Ferraro calls Malcolm Subban PK on the first goal

Yeah, that's about as late as you can start them. That would be 8 pm in Finland.

The year Johnny lit it up I was cheering for and following USA. When they played Canada I was hoping for Johnny's individual success, but still cheered for Canada. Wasn't upset when Johnny led team USA to victory though as it put an international spotlight on a Calgary prospect

Fun fact: As good as Johnny played in that tournament (led with 7 goals) Markus Granlund played in 1 fewer game that year, but had 3 more points than Gaudreau (12 points in 6 games).

To be fair Finnish players padded their stats in blowout games in the relegation round after they were already eliminated from the medal rounds (8-0 against Germany and 11-4 against Slovakia - Granlund had 7 points in those 2 games). Finland couldn't get it together that year.

Another new partner for Hickey. He has been paired with Sanhiem, Dermott, and now Fleury since the team arrived in Finland. Don't read too much into Point being the extra forward, he is still banged up, but expected to play on Boxing Day.

McDonald has been named the starter for tomorrow's game against Sweden.

Mark Masters @markhmasters
Team Canada D at practice:

Chabot-Hicketts
Fleury-Hickey
Sanheim-Dermott
McKeown

Mark Masters @markhmasters
Team Canada practice lines:

Quenneville-Strome-Marner
Perlini-Barzal-Virtanen
Crouse-Stephens-Konecny
Chartier-Beauvillier-Gauthier
Point

I always just hope for the underdogs in these tournaments. International hockey is so top heavy that it's nice when smaller, or less prevalent hockey countries upset the powerhouses.

Fun facts are less fun when you go hunting for context.

Almost always fun watching this tournament. It's also the only reason I still watch TSN.
