He just had his career season last year so there's no point in giving him a raise and tying him up for 3/4 more years when the Flames have already seen his best and a decline is on the horizon. He was a great pickup by the previous regime for the organization transition to rebuild and now his 4 year contract is over it's time to move on. The team has already vastly overpaid Giordano for his career season last year as he's back to his normal self now which is inconsistent/good but not close to Norris potential and the Flames can't afford another bad contract on the books as that one will be damaging enough.

I was going to say 4.5x 3 looks like quite a few of us are on the same page. If you can put him in a package deal with Poirer or someone younger with more upside I would be all for it though.

I really hope that it is trading season come the deadline because the lack of moves today sucks. I also think the Flames could be in buy and sell mode where they add and subtract assets based on age, contract Etc. Gudler could get us a 2nd + which would allow the Flames to move similar assets at the deadline or draft.

The best value comes from trading him. Even if he picks it up (which hopefully will happen for all concerned), he's not a long term value signing - he will be paid more than he's worth over the next few years. He should get a better return than Glencross, but that market has changed a bit, I suspect.

Time to move on from Hudler even though I really enjoy him as a player and his great attitude. I think if Huds could be re-signed at a bargain term and a bargain dollar amount I would do it but it is extremely unlikely so move on.
BT needs to make sure he gets maximum trade value for Hudler too. I mean hit it out of the park and don't settle for a poor deal. So far I have liked most of trades so I am not too worried.

Such a simplistic question, but there are many things to consider.
He is a top 6 forward. Do you trade him straight across for another top 6 forward? If you do, you preferably want someone younger. But what about the price tag? And can Brad find a willing dance partner?
If Hudler is willing to take a pay cut, I would re-sign him. If not, I would try trading him. You will likely only get picks or prospects though.

Unless you get a rental like Hudler will be for the trading partner, you are not getting a decent player in return. A low first or a high second would make me happy.

Was hoping that Poirier would be knocking on the door to replace him by now.
However, I think you have to move him regardless. They need him now, but they don't need him for 3 or 4 years.
So trade him, get some assets, and then deal with the RW position. It's not like we're contenders this year anyway.

Well if the shoe fits...
Hey, no matter what lets trade of all the vets because we are rebuilding. A draft pick will always trump a player, no matter what! All your draft picks are ours!!!

Except no one said trade all the vets, so why are you getting hyperbolic? How about we just discuss the player in this thread.

Came for the resign vs re-sign comment. Leaving happy.
To stay on topic though I am really undecided on this. A part of me would like to trade him for futures or keep him for a playoff run and gain cap space next year. Another part of me fears we will have another Cammy situation where in two years Flames fans are going "we could really use a Hudler right about now".

Best of all three worlds:
Offer him a trade to the Oilers so he resigns and walks off.

Only in Calgary is "re-building" a confusing term for fans and management.
We should trade him regardless of our place in the standings. Just because the Pacific is a flaming pile of dog poo this year shouldn't cause us to lose all perspective. This is a .500 team that struggles to win in regulation, has hilariously awful special teams and has mediocre at best goaltending. The last thing this organization needs is to lose another Cammalleri-type asset for nothing, and for no good reason. Epecially considering that Poirier and Klimchuk don't look like they will be with the big team any time soon.
Forgive me if I'm not really understanding the debate here.

Did you miss the Gio contract? Or the fact that Stajan has a long term deal? Or that Brodie who is a vet at 25 has a long term deal?
Hudler is going to command something over $5M in the offseason. And he is going to want some decent term with it. I don't see him getting better at this point, do you?

Shall I link all the threads that had people also trying to run Giordano out of town earlier this year? Funny how that seems to be the same posters who want Hudler out as well.

Ok, and next to Brodie whom I do not consider a vet both the other mentioned players have been continually talked about being run out of town as well. As well as Engelland, Smid, Jones(who is overpaid on his current deal but would be a great bottom 6 player at a reduced salary) Wideman, and anybody else over the age of 26 not named Frolik. It is the same broken record from this group all the time. Management will not see it that way however which is a good thing.

Brodie is a vet, this is his fifth season. What else would you call him if not a veteran?
