Why isn't that she is just a "youngling" that Luke found for his Academy an option? I assume at some point Luke was able to identify children who were force sensitive without the need for a midi-chlorian counter. That would explain why Kylo is familiar with her from his time at the Academy with Luke. She probably was traumatized by whatever Kylo did at the Academy and pushed all of the memories away.
It's just a way to say that the force is particularly strong among the Skywalkers. As somebody who hated seeing Kylo Ren be beaten so easily by Rey, midi-chlorians can at least explain a bit of it.
It's actually one of my favorite parts about the Star Wars universe.
I like the theory that he has no formal force training, so his lightsaber is a crude design that needs those vents so it doesn't explode. They're not about protection at all
Kylo Ren's training isn't complete, he's unstable emotionally and throws a mean tantrum, and he desperately wants to get ahold of his grandfather's lightsaber which is a far more elegant design than the crude one he put together. Though seeing him push the hilt into Finn's shoulder was pretty badass. I can't wait to see how he evolves as a sith, he obviously has a lot of power to tap into. I forsee an epic battle between him and Rey in the 3rd movie after both their training is complete
General Hux was terribly casted. Just completely unbelievable and stuck out like a sore thumb. His hitler speech scene felt very uncomfortable and unrealistic, and took out a lot of the gravity of that moment of the story.
I also do not understand the part where the third death star blows up several planets. These planets had to have been in the same system for the beam to travel that fast, and for them to be able to see the explosions from the other worlds in that scene.
Other than that, I loved the movie. It was a lot of fun, and cannot wait to see it again!
In the current time there is no one proficient in the use of lightsabers.. Luke's academy was wiped out and Rylo is still pretty young and probably has not spent too much time in battle with comparable adversaries. Probably just executions. Rey seems to have some fighting skills already and i can believe that she could hold her own.
Ren was 1) trying to convert her haphazardly 2) obviously is not in control of his emotions 3) was injured and 4) Rey does have some force skills
Personally, i love it. I understand the homage to the old one and i think this one had to have some sort of closure to that. It introduces a new generation of characters while ending storylines of older ones.
I also really got a clone wars vibe from it. Action packed and solid characters. I like it. No way i could ever watch the prequels now.
I am going to do a second viewing as I went with my 4 year old and had to deal with a 4 year old. I probably missed some subtle things.

That's your problem?
Not the premise of swalloving up a whole star inside something the size of a small planet?
Or the fact that ships that supposedly fly from planet to planet in minutes dogfight within visual range of each other? Or that those ships are flying in a way which would be impossible in a vacuum? Or that laser beams fly slower than real life arrows?
Star Wars is fantasy movie, set in a universe with completely different physics.
Trevorrow made a fun but very hollow film with little substance and littered with holes under my other favorite franchise. He just doesn't have the resume beyond that for something of this scope. The next two have got to be superior and more creative, and that will be the climax/big finale. Scott would have the chops, so long as friggin Lindelof is miles away from the script.
I'm not usually one for much box office performance discussion. I'll make an exception.
Star Wars is set to finish its opening weekend as the 6th or 7th highest grossing movie of 2015 YTD. It has an outside chance of grossing more in North America on its opening weekend than the latest Hunger Games has since its release last month. It will likely set records for highest grossing opening weekend both domestically and internationally. And has already set records for highest preview gross, highest single day opening gross, fastest to $100M, and highest December gross in a number of categories (single day, weekend, number of screens).
Good review that I mostly agree with. I think its pretty spoiler free, though I'm not sure I'd want to watch it before seeing the movie as it would certainly have you thinking about to many "problems" to enjoy the movie.
I think that Rey had her mind wiped at some point by Luke, most likely after the tragic events at the Academy. So he takes her to a deserted planet like Jakku for 'safe keeping' where nobody would ever think to find her (they make sure to have people mention how crummy of a planet it is multiple times) by what sounded and looked like the hand of that trader guy she was getting food from, but that doesn't make a lot of sense.. definitely not a human hand though holding her arm in that flash back.
Then when Ren is trying to dig around maybe some stuff starts popping back up sub consciously that she learned when she was younger from Luke. Perhaps she doesn't even know where it came from or what it is, but she just knows it is there. Like the mind trick on the soldier, resisting the mind probe and battling Ren at the end.
So now when she hands Luke his light saber he remembers her and helps bring her memories back and she is able to train as a Jedi under him. Maybe she is his daughter, maybe not, maybe she was an orphan that he recruited or was given into his care by her family.. but either way there has to be some type of former connection there.
At any rate Rey was my saving grace with this movie and I found her character to just be so well acted and deep. She was by far the best actor in the movie. It is hard to not have her story tug at your heart strings. Any scene with Leia I couldn't help but cringe.

The Following User Says Thank You to GreenLantern For This Useful Post:
True, except that Luke took a couple of movies to really become fully Gary Stu and had some training montages to help justify it. It's not a huge complaint, just that I think a little more development there would have added more. And there's 2 more movies so maybe there's more context we're not yet aware of.
I kind of see where you're coming from. But I don't think anything Rey did with immediate competency in The Force Awakens compares to Luke coming from a scrub outer rim planet to make the impossible, one-in-a-million shot without using a targeting computer to destroy the Death Star. Why would that be more plausible than Rey grabbing a lightsabre with the Force?
Given her force powers, I can't see her being anyone but Luke's daughter. It wouldn't make sense for her to be Leia's.
Now I am not sure this is an honest question, but where did Anakin come from? I remember him being taken from some planet, but did he not just come from 'normal' heritage? Does the Force have to be hereditary?
Where is CC!!!

I watched the movie last night with my 8 year old son. It was an enjoyable film but I thought after reading some of the initial reviews that I'd be blown away.
-It was gorgeously filmed with the right amount of high tech vs plot
-All the new actors cast did extremely well
-I thought the overall plot was the relative weak point of the movie - a re-hash of what we've seen. Disney definitely played it safe here
-A few things really irked me afterwards:
-Kylo Ren being really so bad ass in the beginning (outstanding) only to have light sabre problems with Fin
-The First Order finding the Rebellion home planet magically out of thin air just when they need it - our scout followed someone and found it so now let's crush them
-The Rebellion only having like 15 X-Wings vs a Death Star planet, numerous Tie-Fighters, and other gigantic ships
I definitely do not want to nit pick too much. It was an outstanding film to watch. So happy that Star Wars is back for several years to come.
They talk of how Yoda was a master of the force; how powerful Windu was. Look how powerful Dooku was.
Was Palpatine from a family who was strong with the force?
In my mind force sensitivity would be like any other talent. You can be born with it, lineage may play a factor. Brett Hull was a great hockey player, as was his father Bobby before him. That said, Connor McDavid's father wasn't an NHL superstar, either was Johnny Goudreau's. Sidney Crosby's dad was drafted into the NHL, but never made the show, he was also a goaltender.
So why can't Kylo Ren have force sensitivity due to his lineage but have another person who is more sensitive?
I also like the theory of wiping Ren's memory, they could have implanted the desire to stay so she doesn't run off and get mixed up with the whole rebellion thing

Anakin was some kind of immaculate conception, other Jedi and Sith come from regular families.
