Default The Expanse

New show on ScyFy/Space that they are hoping will replicate the success and acclaim of BSG. Based on a series of award winning novels. the show is set some two hundred odd years in the future where parts of the solar system have been colonized and there is starting to be a lot of conflict between Earth and the colonies.

Saw the first four episodes so far, I cannot believe how much better the show got with every episode. First episode was a little slow, but it ramped up like crazy after that. It's dark, gritty and sets up for a lot of interesting conflict. Watch the show!

Quote:
Based on the best-selling books by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, The Expanse features three central characters tied together by a missing fourth: a young woman who may be the key to ending the interplanetary conflict brewing between human factions on Earth, Mars, and across the asteroid belt.

Thomas Jane plays a hard-drinking, easily corrupted detective on the dwarf planet of Ceres while Steven Strait is cast as an officer stationed on an ice freighter in the belt. The trio is rounded out by Academy Award-nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo as a high-ranking UN politician tasked with bringing peace to a scattered species. What lies ahead of them is an unveiling of the greatest conspiracy in human history.
For anyone who missed it on their PVRs, all the episodes so far are going to re-air on the 29th, otherwise you may be able to stream them online from the sci-fi channels/space IIRC.

I'm hoping this will be a success - there hasn't been much quality SF on TV recently. The books are enjoyable and I think should translate fairly well to the screen.

Translated really well! They split the opener into two episode, which wasn't good but if you've read the book the Donnager scenes couldn't have been better done.

The most annoying thing about this series so far is the belters and their accents.

It is hard to tell when they are using their own language or talking in English.

No kidding, I found myself rewinding and putting captioning on only to find what was unintelligible was, in fact, not English. I also found (in the first episode) the sound mix made dialogue hard to hear to start with in some cases.

I really like the show though, maybe my hearing is just garbage.

The dialog is sometimes hard to decipher. Very interesting show I don't know what to think of it yet, one thing I love is the look/sets and the vibe I get from it all. Really awesome.

The patois is really hard to listen to for sure. It sounds kinda like Afrikaans to my ears.

Are people watching off Space or On demand? Just wondering people have gotten to CQB and the recent ones. Just find it odd scifi chose to air this online ahead of TV.

Does anyone know if the girl in the opening scene was the girl Detective Miller was looking for the whole time so far?

Starring:

A handsomer Jay Baruchel with 2 day shadow. Steven Strait
A guy who can't act well but still gets jobs. Thomas Jane
Canadian Cas Anvar with two day shadow.
Dominique Tipper the female who is also black. So that's two birds... Way to show diversity producers! No 2 day shadow.
Spoiler!

Wes Chatham - 2 day shadow pretty boy and the tank in the crew.
Jared Harris who should have the Jane's role. Best actor on this set.

Enjoyed it so far. I'm liking the political stance and the tension. I'm enjoying the mystery of the high tech assassins and their motives.

Watched the 4 episodes that are on space.ca and really though it was good, felt more like a show in mid-season swing rather than the first few episodes where are usually really poor, so hopefully it continues to improve.

I hate how Miller looks though, I had a totally different look in mind.

The whole cast is too pretty, with Thomas Jane being the most mis-cast....

That's my only beef, the rest is good so far.

So I read the first three books in this series. Really enjoyed the first and second, and the. The third not as much.
Anyone have any recommendations along these lines for some Xmas reading?

SyFy has renewed The Expanse for a 13 episode run second season slated to air in Q1 2017. Surprising to me that the number of online views of the series has more than tripled that of the linear TV viewings.

Quote:
The network (Corporate owner of Blastr -Ed) has ordered a 13-episode second season, which is expected to premiere in early 2017. For those keeping count, that’s three more episodes than we got in Season 1. If you’re not watching it, you should be — it fills that Battlestar Galactica void nicely, with a splash of Blade Runner mixed in for good measure.

Set 200 years in the future, The Expanse follows the case of a missing young woman that brings a hardened detective (Thomas Jane) and a rogue ship’s captain (Steven Strait) together in a race across the solar system that will expose the greatest conspiracy in human history. The first four episodes are a tense build to some major action, and the back half of the debut season looks to take off (no pun intended) in a big way.

“The Expanse is firing on all cylinders creatively, building a passionate fan base among viewers and critics alike, and delivering on Syfy’s promise of smart, provocative science fiction entertainment. We can’t wait to see where the story takes us in season two.” Dave Howe, President, Syfy and Chiller, said.

The series is currently airing Tuesday nights on Syfy (the first four episodes have also been released online for a mini-binge), and the network notes it has garnered strong multi-platform viewership since its December 14 debut, with 4.5 million viewers sampling the first episode on Syfy.com, On Demand and digital outlets prior to the series’ linear premiere, along with an average of 1.6 million P2+ linear viewers (L+3) across the first three episodes.

Watched the first season of this. Kind of a slow builder in many ways, but quality sci-fi. Not a lot of stuff like this out there.

I don't really see it as as a Space Opera, much more like Cyberpunk in Space, with all the class struggle, corporate cops and dark tones. That always rubs me the right way

I like the heavy accents, it adds a lot of atmosphere and credibility.
