Because why would Tampa let it get to that? I'd imagine if they can't get him to agree to a new contract before July 1st, they'll beg him to waive his NMC/NTC and get traded.
I mean, that has to be preferable from his point of view. Gets him out of an organisation that he clearly doesn't want to be with sooner and he has a good chance of having a deep play off run if he goes to a team like the Rangers, Habs etc. And the risk Toronto runs in not moving for him first is that he might get traded to another team and agree to sign a new deal with them. Would Toronto's long suffering fans take missing out on him?

Don't know the market value of this, but if they own his rights they can sign him for eight years rather than top out at seven.

That's why Tampa would do it... why would Toronto? They don't have much of an incentive to trade for him if they think they'll get him anyways in free agency.

That's true. Although I'd argue that signing him for 7 would be better then 8 so maybe that's actually a bonus for the Leafs or whomever. Even if they wanted to get that extra year the better time to trade for him would be during the two week negotiating window when the cost would be low... not now.

Well if TB does trade him, or TO pick him up, the deal will be contingent on him signing a new deal with Toronto, as we've seen in the past with other rental players.
Give up something useless as a base, and then if you can agree to a deal, throw a few decent prospects to TB. Gives TB a motivation to move him to TO and not a place that is strictly a playoff rental, where'd they really just be signing him until June 30 when they expect him to walk to TO anyways.

IF he's not signed by season's end and Tampa doesn't think he'll sign, they will trade his rights for some kind of draft pick. Some team will want to talk with him before Toronto gets a chance.

Toronto wouldn't want him this year. They are trying to lose for high draft picks.

Going out on a limb here and saying Colorado.

I just don't understand why the Leafs would want him. He seems like a quick fix. They've tried that route before with Kessel/JVR/Phaneuf etc. Why would they want to do that again? I'd want I develop my own homegrown talent. Stamkos makes more sense on a team that already has their own core. I don't think building around free agents is a good thing.

All of those examples are based off of trading. When somebody of this talent level comes by for 'free', everyone will be interested.
The consequence of signing him to a massive contract is looking more and more dangerous with his lackluster play.

People compare flames to Blackhawks. Could stamkos be our Hossa signing to put us over the top?

No way we could afford him without losing our young talent who are one the final year of their entry level contracts

Sounds like Blackhawks in 2009. But had to make hard choices in letting go havlat and khabibulin. Toews signed a 5 year that year.

Would be nice, but it's a different time cap wise.
Hossa signed for $63.3 million, but they were able to front load it and spread it out over 12 years.
The most we could sign Stamkos for would be 7 years, and he's probably going to get even more than $63.3 million on his next contract.
For argument sake, let's say he signed for just $63.3 million over 7 years, that's a cap hit of $9.04 million and would pretty much crush our future cap structure for keeping our young core together.

Yeahj I'm sure every other team would only offer 7 million if he's UFA. Come on. The guy is 25 and is UFA. He's not going to get offers of a paycut.

They are. check their prospects. By next summer they'll be consensus #1 prospect pool.
I think people underrate the young talent they already have.

They have to look "Cool" for all the little Leaf haters. They get blasted for even giving the Leafs a compliment.
