Might have been on this team if he had shown commitment. Him and Ferland had similar starts to their pro careers - but one quit hockey and the other quit drinking.

After last night, there was a serious nickname ripping in the world of sports. You could almost hear Matt Ryan's sobs. henceforth, there is a new "Matty Ice"

Agreed, and that's the only reason why I haven't created "Deryk Frickin Engelland" thread because he deserves one as well. The way he managed to adapt to play top 4 minutes (bringing much needed size and grit) is unbelievable. Stajan, Wideman, Hudler and Engelland were four veteran cornerstones of our success, and particularly support from Staj and Deryk was IMHO one of the key factors here.

We won the Phaneuf trade 6 years later on that lone goal.

Stajan earns that contract with just tangibles alone.
When he gets points, it's a bonus.

I think if I buy a Stajan jersey I'll keep it and wear it forever. A retro would be nice. What he's done is magic, I'll never forget last night. One of the most uplifting underdog stories ever. The guy gets ragged on for years, goes through some extreme hardships and never complains only to score one of the most clutch goals in Flames history.

Well said! Given what Phaneuf has done in Toronto, I would agree. Stajan will be remembered forever because of last night.

I like how Stajan has been playing lately, but I'm hoping for just a smidge more offense.
Only 6 points so far this year.

Stajan is a solid player, brings some intangibles and gets an occasional big goal. He has played pretty well lately. Let's face it, on a seven game winning streak most guys will be playing well.
But like a few players on this team, he is overpaid for his role.

Honestly, I never thought I'd live to see this thread on CP...
P.S. Happy to see it though.

This thread was made almost two years ago and got a bizarre bump today from Cro Flames for some reason.

It's not bizarre to talk about a player who has been playing well lately.

Stajan is one of those guys that I don't mind being overpayed. It's not hurting us and he very well might be the best 4th line C in the league. The alternative is a younger guy with a less cap hit. Sure that seems ideal on paper, but the day Stajan moved to the 4th line was the day the Flames 4th line stopped being a liability every shift.
Sometimes a veteran player is more useful then a younger guy in that same role, and I don't see any reason to toss Stajan away at the moment.

I agree with that. The fact of the matter is that even if he is overpaid, it's not hurting the Flames cap. So no harm no foul.
I just wish he contributed a touch more offensively.

I kind of wish posts that have no replies for 3 weeks would be auto-locked so they can't be bumped.

I dunno, I kind of like necrothread bumps sometimes. I got a lot of amusement off the original Gaudreau draft thread and the initial reactions when we took him.

Just kills me how people get their junk in a knot over things like a guy bumping a thread.
Don't read it
And if you don't like it here's an idea, don't reply to it so it doesn't stay on the top. Unreal.

In fairness, he's been given a role that doesn't promote offence. He takes a lot of D-zone faceoffs, spends a lot of his ice time killing penalties and is matched quite often against offensive players. Plus, he's the centre who gets the most altered linemates on a regular basis (plus those linemates have never included Bennett or Gaudreau - he gets scorers like Bollig and Jooris).
