Seriously...there is very little talk on him on here lately. I get the Johnny love, but we need to give some props to Sean, he's been very good lately.
Since November:
18 GP - 16 pts (8g, 8a), +6, 51.8% FO.
Can someone look up his fancy stats in this period? I'm not very good with those.
The guy is what he is, he's good but he isn't flashy, he isn't a spotlight kind of guy, he's just good. I love having him on the team and I'm glad he's a part of our future but I don't think he'll be that flash all-star guy and because of that, he'll get less recognition.
Monahan reminds me of Toews more and more as time goes on.

He's an effective player for producing offense. A sniper, who is in the right place at the right time. At other aspects of the game, leaves a little to be desired. Doesn't play like Toews at all.

Toews is a complete player and I'd be over the moon if he ended up being even close to his level. Monoahan does remind of him though, I think they're both really good (Toews is obviously world class though) but neither of them really get the kind of "fame" that others get becaue they aren't really that flashy (although I think we're seeing a little more come from Toews with his commercials and stuff). All I really meant was that neither of them have a flashy personality yet both are good.

Monahan is only 21 years old but it just seems like he's older because he's mature beyond his years and has less holes in his game than your typical 21 year old center. How many other 21 year old centers car counted on to be their first line center and carry a team? He's still a little rough around the edges as he's not a possession driving forward, his skating is average at best, and he's not a gifted playmaker. That said he's got a decent shot and a very good nose for the net as he's one of those guys you can count on to put himself in position to finish a nice pass. Most importantly he's future captain material. I think he's in the mold of the two centers in Boston in that they don't wow you with their overall game but they are very solid and get the job done.

Excellent thread. Monny is often overlooked for credit due to Gaudreau's flair. He's 21 and going toe to toe with the best centers in the west, and putting up .8PPG while doing so. If the PP starts clicking I could see him putting up close to a point per game this season. Lethal shot and underrated as a playmaker (disagree with ^ EE on this one).
I'm not saying he's not a playmaker. I'm just saying he's not a gifted playmaker such as a Joe Thornton type of center or even Gaudreau. He's never going to be close to the league lead in assists as he's a goal scorer over a play maker.
Monahan is one of those rare guys you can put in all situations. 5 on 5, powerplay, penalty kill, when you're up a goal, down a goal, overtime, shootout. I can't think of any situation where you can't put the guy in. And he's only 21.

His name is on my jersey. Biggest compliment I can give the guy.
This.
I never expected Gaudreau to be so dynamic and so exceptional at the NHL level. However, I think Monahan is the guy that quietly gets the job done everywhere on the ice, makes his line mates better, and doesn't make the highlight reels. Think Daymond Langkow with a much better shot. He's still so young it's hard to expect any more of him, but I still think you see him develop into a championship calibre top 2 line center over time.

Good comparision. At his peak he could even be David Backes.
My only concern is the possibility of him being signed at a high cap hit to be much, much more than that. I would like to bridge-deal him until we see who he really is.
Monahan is just one of those overall great players. He's a player that you can easily forget about and not notice because while he isn't flashy, he's also not a liability. He does whatever you ask him to do and he does it right. Just the perfect prototypical 2 way centre in the mould of (but not as good) Toews/Bergeron/Kopitar/etc.
If he can be a 25+ goal/assist guy for his entire career, I'll be happy

I was intriged about the potential trade of 6, 22 and 28 for #1 and draft MacKinnen. I think I'd now rather have Mackinnen over Monahan, Poirier and Klumchuk but you can't go wrong with a 25/50 two way center.

That's not really a good comparison. Backes is very physical. Mony does not play a very physical game. I do think Mony has better hockey smarts too.
