Edit: to be fair to you, you were at the game and didn't have the luxury of multiple replays and stuff like that. Very hard to assess a goalies performance when you're watching live IMO.

Hiller can make every other save look godlike, but he'll still let in 3-4 terribad goals and cost us the game unless someone bails him out yet again. And he'll still be a clear goat.
"But he made some good saves!"
So?

Someone previously pointed out our success in the 2nd game against a team this year after we lost the first.
Vancouver, Edmonton, Washington, NYR, Chicago, San Jose.
6-0 now in revenge games.
Our next crack at a revenge win is STL next Saturday, then Winnipeg at home on the 22nd (to tie our home win streak too).

So the goaltending was above average for sure last year even if it wasn't spectacular.
|
The only problem with this cherry picked stat is that only 21 goalies played as many games as Hiller so he was only average even by that measure.

What a game, but frustrating to watch just how much goaltending kills our momentum. I went ballistic when Hiller messed up trying to play the puck behind the net. He had a couple of those last season. Unacceptable. I know he is sick but like Hrudey said, this is your chance to win the net back.
I know Stajan hasn't had a lot of points this year but I thought he had a good game. Seems to be stepping it up lately and I'm pleased to see it. Nice for good old Mason Raymond to get a goal too.

I was surprised too but when Cassie interviewed Gaudreau, he told her he gave the puck to Kris Russell and went for a change. Ruseell then threw a nice pass to TJ Brodie and TJ carried the puck all the way and shot and scored. So yeah that's why Gaudreau got an assist. Not sure how many times you have heard of a player getting an assist while sitting on the bench. I bet not high.

Hiller is just brutal for 2 games in a row. Definitely hope to see Ramo back in net. The 4 goals Hiller let in against the Rangers were just brutal. Hiller found a way to give up one point to the opposition. Thank God the Flames have Brodie, Gaudreau and Russell.

Russell really helps balance the D core. Played well, and terrific pass to Brodie in OT.

Johnny actually passed it to Brodie, who gave it to Russell, who gave it back to Brodie. Not sure if that's supposed to still count as an assist?

I like Russell, but one of those things is not like the others.

I never bought into the Russell is a poor defender because he has the most shot blocks. I think that it is mostly a seperate issue tbh. He is great at blockign shots. That is one of his skills.
On the other hand playing a shift that lasts for almost 3 minutes, 2.59 if I am not mistaken is directly related to his inability to gain control of the puck and clear the zone. His pass in overtime was a thing of beauty. Thumbs up for that. His overall defensive play seemed very underwelming to me.
I love that the team is finding ways to win. A win is a win no matter how you slice it. Hopefully we can get a couple on the road and keep on rolling. Would be great to truley erase the poor start by Christmas. We are so very close to doing that now.

Yeah he made a great pass, but had a bad game otherwise. I'm surprised by the amount of praise he is getting tbh.

Did Ramo dress in the warmups last night? It looks like he was on the bench (unlike Thursday) as he was on the ice with the rest of the team after Brodie's GWG.
As bad as Hiller has been, we keep winning so I wonder if Hartley keeps going with him in an attempt to get him going (like he did with Ramo).

He had a good game on the offensive side last night, but was lucky on the defensive side.
Russell does block shots and can make a good pass. The problem with him is his size. He simply does not have the ability to push people off the puck and gets beat in puck battles because of his lack of strength. That leads to longer shifts and running around and situations requiring him to block shots.
The question that needs to be asked is if his offensive game is good enough to overcome his physical shortcomings.
In my opinion, on the whole it does not. He isn't Torrey Krug or Sami Vatanen.

Gaudreau already has 3 OT goals this year. The most in a career is held by Jaromir Jagr with 17.
I think Gaudreau is closing in on the record for most in a year, and if he keeps it up will have the record by 2020.

Exactly.
Still going to be cool when he breaks the record, though.
