Nice to see another win, and the Flames deserved it. They were the better team. The next three games against some very good teams will be telling. I still think they have too many holes to make the dance, but if they can keep this play up they may yet surprise.

I Still think Treliving needs to make a couple moves to improve the team in areas of weakness. The Flames need a goaltender. I'd seriously take Bernier over what we have right now. Hiller needs to be on the same rocket where Wideman gets fired into the sun. He is not a NHL caliber goaltender. Not even close. I think we would be improved substantially by adding Bernier and subtracting Hiller, and the acquisition cost should be low. I'd also be moving Russell. The team plays better without him and he could still return something of value. Small additions and big subtractions make the team better. They've clawed their way back into the mix, so I hope Treliving makes the moves to improve the club where they have some glaring weaknesses.

As much as we would all like it to happen, there's really no point in talking about moving Hiller. Who on earth would take a goalie in his position right now? Granted, his contract expires at the end of the year, which is really the only value point. Bernier makes sense from that point of view, but it's probably better for the flames to wait it out and see what they can do with the Cap space.

Not to derail this into an advanced stats thing but your first sentance is hilarious. One of the purposes of using more in depth statistics instead of just goals is to account for exactly the second half of that paragraph.

Waive him and bury him in the minors. Let him play behind Ortio.

I think some of us have seen such poor goaltending for such a long time, that we forget what average goaltending even looks like. That was certainly a WAY below average performance yet again from Hiller. Ramo has been better for us lately but that is pretty much what average goaltending looks like.

I cannot WAIT until we have an average goalie again and we can stop defending our piss poor goaltending.

I don't disagree the goaltending was bad again last night, although I'm more inclined to give props to him for gutting out two tough wins with the flu.

But it hasn't been that long since we saw average goaltending. In fact, last season we got better than average goaltending from the Hiller and Ramo tandem. If we didn't, we wouldn't have had the success we did (no team wins a round with crap goaltending). It was weird that it came on the backs of a consistent two goalie system, but to claim that our goaltending as a collective wasn't good last year simply isn't true. Hiller would be good for a solid number of the games, then have a stinker and Ramo would slide in and be good for a solid number then have a stinker, and the cycle would continue.

They were pretty average last season if you ask me.

Yeah, last year they were middle of the pack - and THAT'S what average goaltending looks like.

And if we could get that this year, we would quickly rise through the Pacific.

Hughson's "Here's Johnny!" was maybe a bit cheesy, but he timed it beautifully and that guy knew Gaudreau was going to score. I don't mind Hughson at all if the Canucks aren't playing.

- Smid looked very good again. I don't remember him ever being this effective but he did all things well today. Moved the puck up ice, pinched well to keep plays alive and played fairly well defensively.

- Russell did not look good tonight. There was a sequence where Hughson was raving about how excellent he is at blocking shots, all the while the Rangers had possession in the Flames zone for about a minute in a half. Not a great first game back.

- TJ Brodie and Gaudreau are the the best players on the team. If we lose either to injury you can kiss the season goodbye.

- I love 3 on 3! It opens up the game and gives both teams a chance to go for it over playing it safe.

Go Flames Go! 5 wins in a row to salvage a bad start.
Ain't that the truth.

In terms of comparison against other G's who played as many or more games than he did, Hiller was 12th in GAA and 10th in save%. Ramo was further down the list but Hiller played the majority of the games.

So the goaltending was above average for sure last year even if it wasn't spectacular.

This year though is an entirely different narrative. Ramo has been below average while Hiller has been nothing short of terrible.

Hiller is dead last by a large margin in GAA and save % (players who have played at least 5 games) in the entire league.

He has to be jettisoned off this team and the sooner the better. Hopefully whoever brought in is better than Ramo as well, but no matter who it is, they have a very very likely chance of being better than Hiller. Dude is simply not NHL level at this point.

Hughson has a great sense for the feel of the game and when something is going to happen, much like Bob Cole. He took a risk by making that call...most guys wouldn't have the guts to say that and the let the crowd carry the moment. Just outstanding work

I still prefer Chris Cuthbert, but I agree, when the Canucks aren't playing, Hughson does a fine job on the mic.

I chatted with a few guys in my section and brought up a 50/50 debate.
Knowing what we know as of today about each player, should there be a draft taking every player of the last 4 years, I believe Johny goes #2 after McDavid. The guy is an absolute game changer. The dome went wild when he had his first OT shift. His first goal is one where many elite players get the puck and you know they have a good chance of it going in. Johny has a incredible ability to put the puck wherever he wants and needs the smallest of windows to do so!
Open the five hole? no problem
Shift the smallest degree to screen the goalie? no problem
Cover everything I want? no problem, I will go around the net and feed an open guy.

I also thought Hughson and Simpson did a fine job of calling it. In fact, l thought they were a bit homerish towards the Flames .

Hughson is great when he isn't calling the Canucks, nothing has changed for me. He took a chance with the Here's Johnny call but if it doesn't pay off it's forgotten anyways.
