Hartley is a bad coach. If it's not his special teams than he needs to man up and sack whoever is the special teams coach (even if its Gelinas) cause they're obviously not doing their job.
This post is terrible and represents the same reactionary thinking that saw people say Hamilton will never be better than a second pairing D or how Gio is terrible all of a sudden, or Monahan is now nothing more than a 2-3 line Centre. It's just baffling to me.
First of all, the team is on a 4 game winning streak and has improved their possession and Defensive play over the last month to the point where it is arguably better than last year. Secondly, the body of work on special teams is enough to say that this is a bad stretch. It is compounded because both are happening at once. But none the less, a bad stretch. Third, Hartley can't fire people, he can't win D zone face-offs for people and he can't make wide open saves from the high slot for people.
The players will work themselves out of this and learn to be more consistent. Give your head a shake... Firing Hartley and Gelinas? Good grief

We're a third of the way into the season and we have the 30th PP and 30th PK and there hasn't been any improvement in either despite the 4 game win streak. But yes, lets keep ignoring this issue because we weren't awful at special teams last year. Our PK wasn't great last year either and finished 20th in the league in a year where everything seemed to go our way.
Karri Ramo in the Laundry room, and you have Hudler in the doctors room. They are throwing up and are white like ghosts. Jonas Hiller is coming in and is whiter then a snowman.
Give the flames credit for last night, sounds like everyone was hit hard by the flu. Hiller gets a pass for last night IMO after hearing how sick he was and still played, hope they can kick this bug before Saturday night.

What is your concern with the system that is Gelinas' responsibility? I remember reading a Score article from last offseason highlighting the effectiveness of the Flames PK, despite mediocre results. His reasoning was that the Goaltending save % was the worst in the league on shorthanded despite the fact that they had middling PK numbers. Then he went on to highlight small things do to take away space at crucial areas of ice on entry.
So is this a systems problem? A coaching problem? I'd like to know how you can say that with any certainty, especially to the point where you are wanting to fire the reigning Adams winner as well as an Asst. Coach that I have heard nothing but rave reviews from.
I think that our PP/PK is coming down to face-offs, goaltending, and tentativeness, and a small dose of bad luck. We are becoming more confident on entry and doing a better job with that, but we don't have the pk swagger where you feel confident to close on the puck at key areas of the ice. It is a perfect storm that they can dig out of as they have other aspects of their game. Definitely not any justification for anyone being fired.
Well, we made a game of it in the third period! Ristolainen is the real deal on the back end there. Gaudreau, amazing as usual. Had a lot of fun -- first time I've seen a Sabres hat trick live too!
Not to rain on anyones parade but 1 of the goals was a joke for an NHL goal tender to allow and one was a lucky bounce that was actually a pass

Agreed. Even the first one seemed more luck that anything as it somehow missed 7 players as it fluttered into the net. He does seem like a decent defensemen though. I don't think he was a bad #8 overall pick.

Good player for sure...he didn't have some kinda dominant performance though IMO just a horseshoe up his ass and he owns Hiller a steak dinner.

Do you ever get tired of flogging that horse polak? Or you in dire need of some glue to fix something?
Not every issue needs to be resolved by firing people, or even benching people. Sometimes you just have to keep going to work day after day till you work it out. I am not a huge fan of the PP or PK its hard to imagine anyone could be sometime, but I have seen some improvement lately, if it was trending in the other direction (I know its hard to do when its so crap) I'd be a bit more worried, but still not to the point of calling for firing people. Whole-sale switching things around can often be more detrimental then learning how to do what you are practicing already properly so that it runs like a clock, you know how/where people are going to be.
The two things I'd like to see is a change in the entry where they are not stacking up the blueline and atleast 2-3 are coming in together at full speed. This would back off the defenders and make the pass to the line or dump in more effective, but really what I'd like to see too is carrying in a lot more but the line is often crowded because of... lack of speed. As for the PK I'd like to see them pressure a bit more... not the stupid swarm practiced up north, but just jumping at the offense whenever they see the opportunity and try to force more turn-overs, the risk with this is running yourself tired and allowing someone to float in behind the committed player, so its a risk/reward play... still given their results on the PK is the risk really that high?
The other thing I would really like to see is a few new bodies on the PP and PK but that might be a case of tossing a new variable into the mix that now needs to get up to speed with the rest, ruining cohesion. It might seem like a good idea but if implemented actually turns out to be a step backward. Either way nothing that is going on right now deserves anyone getting fired imo, nor is it a sign of bad coaching, but rather players needing to step up and play the way they can. Just give it time, I am seeing lots of improvements all over, and confidence can do wonders.

This apprent turnaround happened with no drastic changes to coaches or personnel. Sometimes it takes time to work things out.

I'd say the removal of Kris Russell leading to a massive improvement in our D is what happened. The entire defence seems to be playing better without him.
Lets see what happens once he is good to go.

Lol, when I heard Hartley's description of the locker room, I thought of this.

This is a team game. No one person on the ice can totally turn the play one way or another. Placing all the blame or all the fortune on one player being there or not is a big-time stretch. One of the things I am really liking to see lately is how they are pulling together, they support when the other makes mistakes and they ALL do, they are learning to trust each other as well. They are all contributing in some ways, some bad some good every time they are on the ice but in the end they pull together through it all to get things done. That's really all you can ask of your team mates.
Just to add... it reminds me of last year when they pulled together and all stepped up and did what they could when they lost Gio, and other players through the season. Once again they are doing it without some players in the lineup. It's the makings of a never say die team that win or lose is gonna bring it, I've really been enjoying the last series of games, so much fun to watch no matter what line is on the ice.

In Pat's defence some of the drunk people that call in are unbearable. A lot of negative people call to vent and a lot of them just rant and ramble and don't let Pat get a word in. I always try to stay positive when I call. He's never once been rude to me. I say my thing, I let him say his thing, and we have an actual discussion rather than an "I'm drunk and now I'm going to ramble on nonsensically and if you disagree I don't care" type of call that happens all to often.
He needs to just put those ones in their place. I dunno if the bosses tell him to keep it civil with all callers (even the drunks), but they should give him leeway to give the ramblers some heat for their nonsense. It's funnier and more entertaining radio when he loses his patience and basically tells them to stfu without actually saying it, which isn't nearly often enough. Just once in a blue moon.
It's unfortunate for him that the hotstove goes on what seems like two hours after the games, but it might be more fun for him to give the boneheads a shorter leash when they come on. Some radio personality is a good thing. Some people do call to say practically nothing, just b### sometimes though. It's pretty mind-numbing.

This is the Fan 960 Sportsnet radio we're talking about here. The place where Vanilla takes and butter soft programming reigns supreme. Rhett and boomer hold the title for most original programming by purposely mixing up idioms. Any personality has vacated that place long ago.
