The annual teddy bear toss surpassed the WR tonight with a remarkable 28,815 stuffed play pals hitting the ice when the Hitmen scored early in the 2nd period.
Well done Calgary!

The Hitmen also had their first ever sellout of the Dome. 19,289, which is good for 2nd on the WHL list for highest attendance. First also belongs to the Hitmen for the McMahon Stadium game.

Where do all of those teddy bears go? Children's hospital I would assume?

I think they all end up in my basement. My kids have a $#%*pile of stuffed animals.

That's one of the larger distribution places, but they give them to a number of different charities and foundations in Calgary and Area. I imagine with the number of bears this year, there will be quite a few places getting a call about player visits with the bears.

Yeah charities can apply to get some teddies. I heard the # that will benefit this year and it was surprisingly high (at least to me).

Over 50 charities receive bears, iirc.

A variety of places. When I worked for a children's program run by the Salvation Army, we got some.

I know a guy with a shooting range that gets a number of them.

My kids ended up with some teddy bear toss bears one year. We certainly weren't in need of them. The school just gave them to everyone and later we found out where they came from.
It's a cool thing but based on the distirbution of the Bears in some ways they are just trying to get rid of them all.
How many kids under 5 are there in Calgary that benefit from getting a bear?

At this point, is it overkill? Are that many bears needed? Would $ be a better contribution?
I everyone threw $10, that is close to $300,000 for charity.

Maybe we should toss batteries instead. People always need batteries. It has a proven track record in Philadelphia.

I personally prefer what a bunch of teams do, which is to have 'teddy bear and touque night'. It addresses more of a real need in the community.

Did the Teddy Bear toss originate with the Hitmen? I see other teams doing it and have always wondered if they were the first

Wikipedia says it started in Kamloops in 1993.
