Love him or hate him, Will Ferrell put out two movies that are hilarious but sadly accurate at the same time. The Campaign illustrates US politics perfectly, and Anchoman 2 shows what the media is like these days.

Every single authoritarian regime in human history would prefer an armed populace to an informed one. CNN might be dog poop but don't think for a moment guns are what keep you safe.

Precisely. If the GOP can keep people in a state of panic that Dems wanna take their guns, the GOP gets away with a whole lot worse, because gun enthusiasts will vote for whoever keeps access to firearms unfettered.

The private media are a business, and they're in the business of selling advertising by attracting an audience. Serving the public is incidental, and has always been incidental. If you want a news organization to serve the public, then you need a public broadcaster.

Sorry, but when have the Democrats ever made more than token gesture towards gun control. Sure, it has become a central part of Democrat rhetoric but...

It's just like anti-terrorism legislation that encroaches severely on free speech. Blame the GOP, but don't do a thing to alter the status quo.

This is an American problem. It is the responsibility of all Americans to figure out a solution.

Did I really have to put the word "pointed" before bullet.

The guns and ammo used when the 2nd Amendment was written weren't much better than a slingshot.

Just this week?

They attempted to pass two pieces of gun control legislation. One that would keep weapons out of the hands of suspected terrorists, and one that would close background check loopholes to keep guns from felons and the mentally ill. Pretty logical gun control measures...and the GOP nearly unanimously voted both down.

To me a armed population, is just a stupid idea, it really is, human beings are emotional creatures, and we all have our moments of rage or hatred, and combining that with semi automatic magazine fed weapons is a recipe for disaster and death and mayham.

At the end of the day, these two monsters were inspired by ideology, the Planned Parenthood shooter was inspired by his abortion stance. The guy who shot his workmate reporter and camera man by anger and a workplace slight. The Sandy Hook killer was inspired by hatred and a sense of not being recoginzed. The Muslim Doctor on the military base by religion.

But in all of these uncommon reasons, the commonality was the result and the weapons used to enact or satisfy their reasons.

We need to remove the weapons and the temptation to use them.
Not in the least worried or upset at being reminded of Canadian sensibilities by a poster that I have a deal of respect for, I'm a Brit from a cockney family, I grew up in a country that lives for grim gallows humour, at times I forget to put my N American filter on.
Obviously apologies if I offended anyone.

Well, at least some people at CNN are not exactly crazy about it. Andersson seems like he's trying to find a nice way of saying "WTF are you people doing?".

It's easy to see how this snowballs once the first reporters go in.

For the first time since 1920, the NY Times will run a front page editorial. The editorial calls for more gun control

Look at Hawaii on this chart: Strict laws, fewest gun deaths. And no neighboring lax gun law states to drive to...

Andy Richter ‏@AndyRichter 6m6 minutes ago
...so when gun apologists regurgitate, "What about Chicago..." just ask them, "Well, what about Hawaii?"

The obvious solution is to arm the the people who were shot. If that 13 year old in the back seat was packing he could have defended himself. And that waitress, if she had a sidearm instead of a notepad and pencil, she could have totally prevented what happened to her. And that cabbie, if he had a weapon he totally could have....oh wait, he's Muslim. Can't go around arming the terrorists now can we?

An older study.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9715182

During the study interval (12 months in Memphis, 18 months in Seattle, and Galveston) 626 shootings occurred in or around a residence. This total included 54 unintentional shootings, 118 attempted or completed suicides, and 438 assaults/homicides. Thirteen shootings were legally justifiable or an act of self-defense, including three that involved law enforcement officers acting in the line of duty. For every time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were four unintentional shootings, seven criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides.

Guns on university campuses........what could go wrong?

Quote:
At a time when most college campuses prohibit guns, Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. thinks the opposite should be the case -- urging his school's students to be armed, especially in light of this week's massacre in San Bernardino, California.

"I always thought that if more good people had concealed-carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walk in and kill," he said.
Quote:
"It just blows my mind when I see the President of the United States say that the answer to circumstances like this is more gun control," he said.

A smiling Falwell made a point that he had a gun "in my back pocket right now," a remark which drew roars from students.
Quote:
Talking to CNN, the university president said he doesn't want what happened in San Bernardino to happen at Liberty, saying, "I want us to be prepared."

"And let's teach them," Falwell told students the night earlier, apparently referring to potential shooters, "if they ever show up here."
