Alberta’s energy minister says laid off workers could go to B.C.
http://globalnews.ca/news/2379629/al...d-work-in-b-c/
Quote:
Could laid off oilpatch workers in Alberta get jobs in British Columbia while they wait for the market to rebound?
That was the suggestion by Alberta’s Energy Minister in a speech to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Land Administration today.
“Certainly there are always talks of about mobility of jobs between provinces so maybe they can go work in B.C. until it gets better and come back home,” said Marg McCuaig-Boyd, as part of a response to a question of what retraining opportunities were available for unemployed workers.
“It’s a tough time for everybody, not just oil and gas, there’s lot of jobs being lost in the services sector…this oil price is hurting a lot of Albertans, so you just have to hunker down and get through it.”
McCuaig-Boyd later apologized for her comments, telling the radio station radio station CFFR that it was not the position of either herself or the
government on jobs.
McCuaig-Boyd is the NDP MLA for Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley, which borders British Columbia and is next to the province’s Peace River region, where natural gas is a key economic driver.

The minister later claims she misspoke.

How did she misspeak? It was pretty clear what she said. It wasn't complicated or confusing. She made direct statements that weren't received well so she had to backtrack. People were doubting the qualifications of many of the NDP MLAs after the election including Mcquaig-Boyd's. She is showing she is in over her head.

That would be, I believe, the fourth time the NDP has had to apologize for the incompetence of its MLAs.

Haha, oh man. That's amazing. What the hell?!
I swear, they have some kind of unified batcrap crazy plan to crush the last successful vestiges of the hated oil and gas private industry, force everybody into a union and on the public teat (or drive you and your family out of the province) before their 4 years is up.
Hell of a way to change the voting population to try to get re-elected

Really sucks that the protest vote against the conservatives (who had to go) were either this or the New Republican Party. Why can't the Liberals get some sort of legitimate presence in this province?

I'm so mad I didn't just throw an orange shirt on and run in the election. I'd probably be Alberta's Energy Minister right now.

Is anyone really shocked she said this?
That's what happens when we have unqualified people running multi billion dollar portfolios.

Not the greatest thing to say right now, but Ralph sending homeless folks on a bus to B.C. was far more inhumane.

While politically incorrect, saying that we should seek out all available job opportunities in all locations is prudent advice.
_Q_, for example, moved to New Orleans. When times were good, everyone moved to Alberta - why shouldn't we do the same?
People just refuse to take responsibility for their own actions - much like how I keep saying Prentice's "Look in the mirror" remark was the most true and most realistic thing that was said all campaign.
Of course, this is why I'll never be a politician - All I know how to do is tell people the truth, and people can't handle the truth.

Seems like the NDP is trying really hard to get the Wildrose elected next time.

She had no prior energy industry experience and the main reason for her appointment to the Energy portfolio may be her background in northern Alberta, where it is a vital industry.

It's a lot of things but I wouldn't say inhumane. BC is the only place in the country where a homeless person can escape the brutally cold Canadian winters. Inhumane would have been sending them to Saskatchewan.

The issue (IMO) is the government is readily admitting they can't fix the job problems in Alberta, so they suggest people move to another jurisdiction (BC) where the government is able to provide a suitable environment for job creation.
Basically admitting they can't solve the problem at hand.
